• Nervous System Regulation Tools to Create a Safe Family Environment with Craig Goldberg
    Oct 23 2026
In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, I sit down with Craig Goldberg, co-founder of inHarmony Interactive and a Certified Vibroacoustic Therapy Practitioner. Craig shares his personal journey into health, wellness, and nervous system regulation, including his own experiences with drugs and alcohol and the path that eventually led him to study sound, vibration, meditation, and the ways our nervous system influences how we experience the world around us. We discuss why nervous system regulation matters not only for the person experiencing addiction, but also for the entire family. Craig explains the difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system states, how ongoing stress can affect the way we respond to the people around us, and why family members need to take care of their own capacity while supporting someone they love. Craig also shares practical ways people can support a calmer nervous system, including prioritizing sleep, getting morning sunlight, spending time outdoors, eating less processed food, staying hydrated, practicing breathwork and meditation, and creating opportunities for connection. We also explore how sound, vibration, music, light, and other wellness technologies may be used as tools for relaxation and meditation. Throughout the conversation, we return to an important idea for families navigating addiction: taking care of yourself does not mean abandoning the person you love. A more regulated family member may be better able to communicate, respond intentionally, and create healthier conditions within the family system. 🎧 Follow or subscribe to Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery for more conversations about addiction and family recovery. ⭐ Leave a review and share this episode with someone who may benefit from it. • Breaking Family Patterns in Addiction with Jeff Jones
    Oct 16 2026

In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, I talk about the patterns that can keep families stuck when addiction is present.

These patterns can show up in repetitive communication, nervous system reactions, family roles, cultural beliefs about addiction, and the way family members respond when they feel hurt, afraid, or overwhelmed. When these reactions repeat, they can feel automatic and leave families feeling like they have no other choice.

I explain why recognizing the pattern is the first step toward changing it. You may not be able to control your addicted loved one's choices, but you can begin to change your side of the interaction and create different conditions within the family.

We also look at the difference between black-and-white thinking and Both/And thinking. Black-and-white thinking can lead us to immediately believe our first reaction is the whole truth. Both/And thinking creates room to slow down, consider multiple perspectives, ask better questions, and respond more intentionally.

Another important part of this episode is boundaries. I explain why boundaries should not be created in the middle of an argument or when your nervous system is highly activated. Clear boundaries require you to first determine what is okay, what is not okay, and what you will actually do if that boundary is crossed.

    We also discuss:

    • Why "detach with love" can be useful but may not be the only long-term strategy

    • How reactive communication can increase conflict

    • Why boundaries need clear, realistic consequences

    • How unspoken family rules can reinforce unhealthy patterns

    • How journaling can help identify repetitive behaviors and communication

    • Why curiosity and listening can create more productive conversations

    • How families can begin creating conditions that support health instead of reinforcing addiction

The goal is not to control another person. The goal is to recognize where you do have influence and begin changing the patterns within yourself, your relationships, and the way your family operates together.

  • How Nervous System Regulation Heals Family Trauma with Suze Kenney
    Sep 25 2026
In this episode of Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery, we welcome back Suze Kenney, co-founder of Emergo Academy and co-author of Actualized Recovery: It's Not About 12 Steps, Recovery Is a Brain Thing. Together, we explore addiction and self-sabotaging behaviors through a biological, nervous-system-first lens. Suze shares the powerful case study of a young woman trapped in a severe parasympathetic freeze response, isolating in her closet, unable to make eye contact, and struggling with an eating disorder. She explains why traditional interventions often fall short when the brain is locked in a constant state of perceived threat. We also discuss why physiological health, including hydration, nutrition, sleep, and nervous system regulation, must be addressed before emotional or psychological healing can take hold. Finally, we explore why family members need to prioritize their own physiological regulation, enabling them to set compassionate, effective boundaries and better support their loved one's recovery. 🎧 Follow or subscribe to Families Navigating Addiction and Recovery for more conversations about addiction and family recovery. ⭐ Leave a review and share this episode with someone who may benefit from it.
