Expected more from the story

I had high expectations for When the Moon Hatched after hearing so much praise about it. It was described as a perfectly crafted and well-written story, but I found it disappointing. It feels like many authors are trying to recreate Throne of Glass, and this book was no exception.

My biggest issue was the main female character, Raeve. She was a coward and constantly in denial, Kaan saved her from execution and yet she repaid him with hostility—trying to kill him and running away at every opportunity. While I understand that trauma manifests in different ways, her deep denial and irrational behavior made her frustrating to read. I was honestly relieved when Kaan finally called her out on it.

The story itself was fast-paced and entertaining enough, with some mysteries and unanswered questions that will likely be explored in the sequel. However, I don’t think I’ll continue with the series. The romance had potential, mostly because of Kaan, who was sweet and likable, but Raeve didn’t deserve him. Her behavior was difficult to understand, and her interactions with him often felt erratic.

Overall, while the book had some intriguing elements, it wasn’t for me. The protagonist was too frustrating, and despite the engaging pacing, I have no interest in rereading it or continuing the series.

Intriguing concept

First the good stuff: the worldbuilding is brillant. The magic system, the politics, power plays, rebellious groups in the shadow, it’s all there and it is fun to read about. There also are all sorts of cool magical creatures throughout the book. Along with the side characters they really made the world come alive.
The overall concept of the Story is so cool and feels fresh and intriguing. At the end it was what kept me from dnfing the book since I really wanted to know what went down.

Now to the other stuff: I liked Raeve because she is not your typical main charcter. She is morally grey and there is a lot you don‘t know about her (and a lot you will not learn until the very end) and she also does not like to depend on anyone, to let anyone in. All of this I liked at first but grew very annoyed with it pretty soon. Her inner monologues and her overall actions seem quite repetetive as the plot continues. While I can imagine why her character is written in this way, I found her to be a very annoying protagonist. Like I know she is a ruthless assassin. I don’t need her to openly threaten violence every other sentence or contemplate killing someone… I suppose it should feel authentic but at least to me it just feels like the author reeeeally wants to get the point across. I also get why there is not a lot of development for Raeve in terms of changing behaviour but at least for me it was very frustrating and the main reason I wanted to toss the book.
I felt like her „attitude“ was what kept the story from moving on. Maybe it is just something about reading habits and usually reading books with protagonists more „complying“ than her.
There were some other quirks that disrupted my reading flow (when it was there) - like why are people „male“, „female“ and „younglings“ when there is no reason for them not to be men, women and children. I‘m into these things when the reason behind it is somehow clear but often -like in this book- it feels like it is done for the sake of „novelty“ alone. Also why no one in this world knows the Word heart and calls it „THE organ in my chest“ is beyond me.

A breath of fresh air

In a sea of copy-paste literature, this was a true breath of fresh air! Thank you Sarah A. Parker for writing something so innovative and captivating.
Narrators of the Audiobook were brilliantly chosen as well, all in all a 5 star read!

Feels like a very slow burn

The world building was great. Unfortunately it didn't stop me for being a little bored. I felt like the story/dialog repeated themselves.
The characters were good but not good enough to make me wonder what happens next. I put the book aside but I know there are a lot of big fans around which loved it.

Starts off great, then drags on

Story:
The story itself is alright, but doesn’t really have a lot of plot to it. So it gets inflated by a few „side quests“ that don’t really do much for the plot.
Don’t get me wrong, I still liked listening to the whole book. But after the trail (which was just weird as hell) it begins to drag on. Scenes where it’s a lot of suspense build up only to be deflated bc she doesn’t want to know shit or she gets distracted by weird sexual stuff. Tbh, the sexual stuff is not the author’s strong suit. Those scenes just made me cringe by the way they were written.
Also “the Other” had SO MUCH POTENTIAL! So sad we only get two chapters with it and it seems to be forgotten throughout the rest.
I also feel like the pov from Reck Zarros and Veya were a bit lacking. Loved Veya. It felt like the author needed to give her more voice, but then again only put in half the effort.
All in all it was a weird ride. Still okay and you have some fun here and there, but it’s not a book that makes you yearn for it the minute you close it or stop listening to it. I don’t even have a sand grain of a reading slump after it. Just like “alright, it’s over. Good lord.”
Also, why does she have to build in the word “fuck” so much? It’s so overused that you just tire from it.
Not a literary masterpiece.

Speakers:
They are literally not the same volume. She feels quieter than he does. She also seems to be out of breath constantly in the beginning. Took some getting used to.

Beautiful world

I love the world building and the description of everything. So many beautiful and haunting creatures. A really great high fantasy story. Can't wait for the next one.

Packende Geschichte.

Leider schreckliche Audioqualität. Mir gefällt auch der männliche Sprecher überhaupt nicht. Werde es wohl doch lieber selbst lesen.

Boring

This was so boring. In chapter 22 I realized I had no clue what happened so far. Every time I tried to listen to it I spaced out within seconds.
For me it was the most boring story I ever came across.

Very disappointing, thus didn’t finish

Characters are not elaborated, plot is predictable and nothing new. Love story has not a piece of signature.
