Über diesen Titel

From the Sunday Times Number One bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, now a major Sky TV series, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire.

From human to vampire ...

Marcus Whitmore was made a vampire in the eighteenth century. Over two hundred years later, he finds himself in love with Phoebe Taylor, a human who decides to become a vampire herself.

But her transformation will prove as challenging now as it was for Marcus when he first encountered Matthew de Clermont, his sire.

While Phoebe is secreted away, Marcus relives his own journey from the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War, through the treachery of the French Revolution to a bloody finale in New Orleans. His belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood challenged at every stage by the patriarchy of the de Clermonts.

What will he and Phoebe discover in one another when they are finally reunited at Les Revenants, beneath the watchful gaze of Matthew and his wife, Diana Bishop?

Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Deborah Harkness returns to the spellbinding world she created in A Discovery of Witches and, through the prism of an unconventional love story, explores the power of tradition and the endless possibilities for change.

Kritikerstimmen

What a rich, thrilling and educational tale it is... A captivating and romantic ripping yarn (E L James)
Intelligent and off-the-wall...irresistible to Twilight fans
Spellbinding... Unputdownable
This is a glorious, finely-wrought gem of a book: intelligent, thoughtful, intricate... I could lose myself in here and never want to come out: what better accolade can there be? ...Utterly enchanting on every level (Manda Scott)
A bubbling cauldron of illicit desire... all the ingredients for an assured saga that blends romance with fantasy
A vast, sexy, historical romp of a novel. There's no doubting Harkness's vivid imagination
An inventive addition to the supernatural craze... has exciting amounts of spells, kisses and battles, and is recounted with enchanting, page-turning panache
An extraordinary achievement... An intelligently written vampire romance set against a thrilling backdrop of magic, secret manuscripts and dangerous desire
Deborah Harkness is a creative genius. She has taken a genre that is saturated with vampires, witches and daemons and has created something unique, with its own rich history and mythology that draws you into her world with captivating storytelling
A creative tour de force
I do wish people would stop comparing this series to Twilight. It is just so much better
Once again Harkness has managed to create a world filled with not only love and romance but action and history, with characters you can love and hate, but always understand an relate to. This is an unforgettable book, with brilliant characters

the narrator made everyone sound incredibly sexy which was awkward at times. or is it just me ^^' ? the story is nice. not fantastic, there's not really a plot, but it was nice and relaxing to just listen to some backstories without much suspense. a bit cheesy at times.

not fantastic but relaxing

If you’re looking for nice little stories about Diana and the Clairmont Family, this might be an interesting addition to your library. In this case I would give the book 3,5 Stars instead of 2.
If you’re willing to find read a new thrilling novel à la “All Souls trilogy”, you’re going to be very disappointed.

+ very nice to see what happens to Diana and the Children. I love the story of Apollo and the biting. I also like the children Dialoges and interactions with the other characters we already know and love

+ good recap of Marcus life. Cool “short stories” about his becoming a vampire and his life and struggles afterwards.

+ Phoebe story, getting to know her better and her family is great as well as Gallowglas and Freyas stories.

- The book has no real Plot, no adventure, no villain, no difficult situation to master, no real suffering or moving sequences.
If you’re acquainted with “the hero journey”, the basic storytelling guideline in literature, film, TV etc., you’re are going to miss it everywhere

- The character dialogues become very alienating at the end. It’s like if someone else took over to write the last couple of chapters. They don’t impersonate the personality we know. Specially the last sequence with Matthew, Diana, Chris, Sarah and the children. I find it really weird. You’ll have to find out yourself if you agree!

- Why is no one working ever? There’s important research to do.

- It’s sad not hearing the voices we already knew of the Characters. I really missed the voice of Jennifer Ikeda. The new reader, Saskia Maarleveld makes a good Gallowglas and most of the not so known Characters but Matthew and Markus voices scared me every time, again and again

Recap: nice to read but keep your expectations low. And please DON’T read it if you don’t know the “All Souls” series, wich I very much recommend!

In many ways disappointing
