The defining experience of Chinua Achebe’s life was the Nigerian civil war, also known as the Biafran War, of 1967–1970. The conflict was infamous for its savage impact on the Biafran people, Chinua Achebe’s people, many of whom were starved to death after the Nigerian government blockaded their borders. By then, Chinua Achebe was already a world-renowned novelist, with a young family to protect. I enjoyed reading this novel truly. It brought near a part of history that has not been taught at my school. Highly recommandable.

The audiobook was very well delivered with a believable accent. My criticism is that the pronunciation of the words in the various Nigerian languages was often too far off the mark, and made it a bit difficult to follow. I would have appreciated if the words were practiced with some native speakers to maintain the sense of authenticity that the audiobook otherwise offers.
