A brand-new stand-alone novella in the Rivers of London series!
Tobias Winter has been assigned to the Abteilung KDA - the Department for Complex and Unspecific Matters.
Despite the intriguing department name, as Winter explains, dealing with the strange and the supernatural is 'actually 90 percent paperwork'. But this is a story about the other 10 percent of the job: the life-threatening danger part.
This is a tale about the Queen of the Harvest, the October Man, and the little-known time the vineyard around Trier started to eat people....
Winter may be P. C. Peter Grant's German counterpart, but surviving this investigation is entirely down to him....

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May.

Camden, North London. A tangled, mangled junction of train lines, roads and waterways. Where minor celebrities hang out with minor criminals and where tourists and moody teenagers mingle. In the heart of Camden, where rail meets road meets leyline, you might find the Arcana Emporium, run by one Alex Verus. He won't sell you a wand or mix you a potion, but if you know what you're looking for, he might just be able to help.

Rotherweird is a twisted, arcane murder-mystery with shades of Deborah Harkness, Hope Mirrlees and Ben Aaronovitch, Mervyn Peake and Edward Gorey at their disturbing best. The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant-garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history.

A gift to german fans. different reader. but good
i adore K HS 's performances on the Rivers of London series. it makes sense that Tobias Winter gets a different voice. The good news is SPJ is a similarly good performer. As a german the constancy of the german accents is difficult to bear but one gets used to it. the Story is solid and i assume quite a few if the more researched jokes will fly right over the heads of ppl not living here. But we laughed so much listening to it.

german accent hurts
being austrian, i probably have an accent similar to the narrator. however- listening to this accent for hours really hurts.
honestly, i really miss kobna! although the story is located in germany and i can somehow relate to the idea of “making it sound somewhat german”, it makes it hard to bear.
especially if one knows and certainly compares it to the peter grant series and kobna’s really unique way of narrating it.
the german accent ruins the (otherwise good) story for me. sorry!
if you want to make it sound german, narrate it in german. if you read it in english then please read english not “genglish”.

Surprise!
Imagine my surprise when the story was not read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, but by Sam Peter Jackson. Of course it makes sense, when the protagonist is not Peter Grant, but Tobias Winter, an apprenticeworking in the KDA in Germany. And it's a perfect choice, because the immaculate pronounciation of both the English and the German makes this book immersive to even the German listener. I enjoyed it a lot and I'm now on my third trip thought the book.
--- SPOILER ALERT ---
On story and format: I personally prefer the longer stories in gerneral and for this book specially. The story feels too short and rushed and the book ends with the incidents bein unsatisfyingly unresolved (Jörgs death: no motive, no good mode) or feeling constructed (Jasons death: insufficient motive). 4 out of 5 stars, nevertheless.

There's Magic in Germany
Usual Aaronovitch quality, so if you like the Rivers of London there are no risks here.
What was very much out of the ordinary was the accomplishment of the narrator to read with a slight, mostly consistent, accent that did not irritate me at all, which is a first.
