Über diesen Titel

In these 24 lectures filled with musical excerpts, enjoy a rich and multifaceted exploration of the trailblazing works and outsized life of this historically pivotal composer.

Your immersion in Wagner's art includes the following:

  • The Flying Dutchman (which illustrates several of Wagner's key compositional innovations)
  • Tannhäuser (the saga of a medieval knight torn between two worlds)
  • Tristan and Isolde (Wagner's crowning masterpiece)
  • And, of course, The Ring of the Nibelung (arguably the single most ambitious theater work ever created)

The sheer outlandishness of Wagner's life makes for an endlessly intriguing story, from his desperate escapades outrunning creditors to his obsessive personal relationships to his utopian artistic schemes. In his writings, letters, and public actions, you investigate the often contradictory - and hypocritical - aspects of his personality. And, reflecting on the nationalist spirit of his time, you track his core desire to make "German Art in the service of a German national identity," even as he created a body of works whose communicative power transcends any national boundary.

With Professor Greenberg's passionate and razor-sharp commentary, you'll plumb the fabulous mystery of a man who gave the world something of deeply compelling and universal resonance: music of great genius and a poetry that reveals the depths of the human psyche.

With only a bit of exaggeration: After having listened to Prof. Greenbergs analysis of " Der Ring des Nibelungen" and "Parzival" every time you will purchase a ticket for a Wagner opera you will feel like casting a vote for the Nazis. Prof. Greenbergs emphasis in this course lays on historical context and literal interpretation of the operas content. I missed an in depth analysis of the composition (like in his lectures on Bach) but as this was clearly not the concept of the author I distain from subtracting any points. By the way: I found on Youtube a Chinese production of Rheingold you want to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d-3nqzKTKU

Wagner - abject antisemite and genial composer

So very very many factual inaccuracies... Quoting "Ernst von Pidde" as if it were a real person speaking seriously, rather than the invented author of a piece of satire, conflating Heinrich von Osterdingen with Tannhauser, mistranslating Wahnfried as "dream fullfillment" rather than "peace from illusion and will", completely misunderstanding the Perceval of Chrétien de Troye and Wolfram and many many more tedious examples... Add to that that the 16hour plus recording (coincidentally the amount of time it would cumulatively take for you to sit down and simply watch a subtitled performance of the Ring, available everywhere for free) are 80% plot summaries and copyright free recordings of the various operas... I realize this wasn't made for scholars, but come on!!! Is it really too much to expect a little academic rigor for someone with all the accolades listed in the beginning of the recording?? I recommend informing yourself online, rather than wasting time on this dubiously blasé collection of third-hand information.

Are you sure this man is a professor?
