Über diesen Titel

The woman in the portrait is perfect. So why does she feel so terrified, so alone?

Florence, the 1560s. Lucrezia, third daughter of Cosimo de' Medici, is free to wander the palazzo at will, wondering at its treasures and observing its clandestine workings. But when her older sister dies on the eve of marriage to Alfonso d'Este, ruler of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust unwittingly into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage and her father to accept on her behalf.

Having barely left girlhood, Lucrezia must now make her way in a troubled court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her husband himself, Alfonso. Is he the playful sophisticate he appears to be before their wedding, the aesthete happiest in the company of artists and musicians, or the ruthless politician before whom even his formidable sisters seem to tremble?

As Lucrezia sits in uncomfortable finery for the painting that is to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court's eyes, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferrarese dynasty. Until then, for all of her rank and nobility, her future hangs entirely in the balance.

The story was great, but the best part of the book was hearing the voice over person say “room”. It brought me much joy. Thank you.

I love the voice over person

Not only do we finally enjoy a historic novel from the perspective of a woman, which makes it so relatable and gripping, but also did I learn a great deal of history. We need more books like this. Women's stories have been suppressed for too long. This is a story about femizide and child marriage, patriarchy and violence like I've seldom gotten to read. Absolutely gripping and fantastically researched. Thank you. The reader's voice is unusual and very fitting for the story.

Thank you for the great book

After all the great reviews I was looking forward to a good read. However, I found this story unconvincing, characters flat, and the historic setting poorly drawn. The would be 'happy ending' is actually callous and horrific. The reading was decent, but could not overcome the weaknesses of the book.

utterly unconvincing

I dragged through the story cause the plot didn’t truly get me. The characters were rather one-dimensional, the ending was very much foreseeable. Really the reason to listen to this audiobook is to dive into the time of the story.

The overall storyline is interesting, good insights into the time, great reading, pleasant sound of the readers voice.

The British Italian is unbearable to listen to. The story might be better as a film or a poem but as a novel it is not gripping and I couldn't connect to endless lyrical sentences about nothing.

Drab
