"This claustrophobic, horror-leaning tour de force is highly recommended for fans of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Andy Weir’s The Martian." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

***

A thrilling, atmospheric debut with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.

Instead, she got Em.

Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .

As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, Gyre finds her sense of control giving way to paranoia and anger. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head.

But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?

The concept of the story is interesting enough but the way it is being told is tiresome. It's the same kind of situations and the same topics of dialogue repeated on a constant loop for 14+ hours. Going in circles over and over and over and over and over again. It's a good thing that I listened to this audio book as a sleeping aid, because hearing the characters treading the same water (sometimes literally) to infinity made me tired really quick. It's perfect for that.

The Luminous Dead should have been a much, much shorter audio play / novel. To justify a 14+ hours runtime it would have needed a lot more variety, more characters and more interesting and varied topics for the characters to talk about.

Adenrele Ojo does a good job portraying the two main characters. She just has a tendency to let her voice trail off at the end of each sentence as if getting lost in thoughts every single time, which takes a bit getting used to and was a bit distracting throughout the first half of the novel.

As I said in the title. Another reviewer said that they listened to this when falling asleep and I completely understand that - it's basically what I did as well. For that, this is perfect if you like falling asleep to a horror sci fi story where it doesn't really matter if you sleep through parts because pretty much any ground this story covers is retreaded time and time again. The ending is pretty predictable but despite everything I enjoyed the world building a lot and loved the location of the cave.
The narrator is good and has a nice delivery.

Eery but repetitive - lacks a punch
