It's a cross between Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Illiad and modern fantasy. Kind of. Liu switches effortlessly between a vast historic, epic narrative and a much more personal one. This should feel jarring and it is a great achievement that it is anything but. Sometimes the two narrative styles even bleed into each other effortlessly. Liu presents a great exploration of rulership and historical judgement. It's not for everyone - a love of history helps - but it certainly is for me. 10/10 will read again.
