When a Jewish classmate is attacked by bullies, Nico just watches - earning him a week's suspension and a typed, yellowing manuscript from his frail Nonno Paolo. A history lesson, his grandfather says. A secret he must keep from his father. A tale of blood and madness....

Nico is transported back to the Venice of 1943, an occupied city seething under its Nazi overlords and to the defining moment of his grandfather's life: when Paolo's support for a murdered Jewish woman brings him into the sights of the city's underground resistance. Hooked and unsettled, Nico can't stop reading - but he soon wonders if he ever knew his beloved grandfather at all.

Leider konnte ich nach einer Stunde nicht mehr zuhören! Diese monotone Stimme macht es schwierig selbst einem guten Text zu folgen - Schade!!

The way it is written, well you can’t stop listening. Richard Armitage as the narrator made it perfectly. It gave me goosebumps and tears.

Großartige Geschichte, sehr spannend erzählt mit überraschender Wendung zum Schluss. Richard Armitage ist wunderbar, flexibel in allen Rollen.

Die Grundidee de Romans -die Grautöne und Nuancen im menschlichen Verhalten, vor allem in schwierigen Zeiten- ist aktueller denn je und für mich ein spannendes wenn auch oft deprimierendes Thema.

A lot food for thought about Nazi time, guilt, keeping secrets and revenge. As always Richard Armitage as his best. One of the best books I have read or listened to.

Powerful storyline

I had emotions while I was listening from sad, hopeful, shocked and heart touching memories . My grandparents told me the storys of the 2nd war and one granny showed me the letters, she got from my grandpa during the war. In spite of everything, letters full of love and hope. I am so grateful for my privileged life, without a war, and everybody should read your book to remember this cruel time. And there is no better voice, than that of Richard Armitage to narrate this book. He narrated it with decency,respect and so soulful.

Excellent narration, and the novel moves at a good pace and keeps you involved. Although characters are fictional, the history is very real. It's a really enjoyable novel and can fully support the positive reviews.

I hardly was able to stop myself listening to this wonderful narrator, performing that brillant story. He created a vivid picture of a sad chapter of history in a most special setting. Thank you, David Hewson& Richard Armitage
