I basically love all Grisham books. This here is different. It is by far the worst Grisham story I have ever read/listened to.

Wenn es um juristische Inhalte geht, läuft Grisham zur Höchstform auf, aber auch den Camino Islands Büchern würde ich 5 Sterne geben. Bei dem Ausflug ins Entführungs- und Security Milieu kommen mir andere Schriftsteller realistischer vor.
Trotzdem eine solide Geschichte, auch wenn man nicht so sehe mit den Protagonisten mitfühlen kann, wie bei den meisten anderen Grisham Büchern…

Did Mr. Grisham skip the writing part this time and asked ChatGPT to write the story? Well, that‘s unfair, even AIs do not come up with stories as weak, bland and generic as this one.

Quality issues aside, If you reactivate one of your most beloved characters, why throw him into a story which obviously does not fit the character and also causes huge problems for the author as this otherwise wonderful and brillant narrator clearly doesn‘t know what to do with the story and is just going through the motions?

What a miserable hack job. I refuse to believe that John Grisham wrote this himself.

My German Review: Der Umstand, dass "Die Entführung" nur etwas mehr als halb so lang ist wie "Die Firma" hatte mich schon stutzig gemacht. Nachdem ich das Buch nun gehört habe waren meine Befürchtungen berechtigt. Es gibt im Grunde genommen keine Geschichte. Jemand wird entführt, dann geht es nur noch darum das Lösegeld zusammen zu bekommen. Es gibt kaum Szenen aus Sicht des Entführungsopfers und das Finale läuft innerhalb von einer halben Stunde ab und ließ mich ehrlich gesagt etwas sprachlos zurück. Man könnte fast glauben, dies wäre lediglich Teil 1 eines Crossovers mit einem Tom Clancy Roman (ist es nicht). Warum Grisham sich dazu entschied, den Roman so enden zu lassen, verstehe wer will...
Zudem ist es praktisch irrelevant, das Mitch McDeere der Hauptcharacter ist, da die Handlung nichts (aber auch gar nichts) mit den Geschehnissen aus "Die Firma" zu tun hat.
Keine vollkommende Zeitverschwendung aber kein Vergleich zum Vorgänger.

My English Review: Feels like only half a book... The fact that "The Exchange" is only a little more than half as long as "The Firm" had me suspicious. Now that I have heard the book, my fears were justified. There is basically no story. Someone is kidnapped, then it's just a matter of getting the ransom money together. There are hardly any scenes from the kidnapped victim's point of view and the finale takes place within half an hour and, to be honest, left me a bit speechless. You'd almost think this was just part 1 of a crossover with a Tom Clancy novel (it's not). Why Grisham decided to end the novel like this is anyone's guess...
In addition, it is practically irrelevant that Mitch McDeere is the main character, since the plot has nothing (really nothing) to do with the events of "The Firm".
Not a complete waste of time but no comparison to its predecessor.

I love Grisham´s books but if this is really written by Grisham, then he lost his voice and his craft. The story was boring, without too much action, no trial scenes, a totally unconnected intro (the story with the suicide), - in short, a waste of time and not a good sample of Grisham´s writing. A shame! Read something else by Grisham!

I was really waiting for this book. The end of the firm has so much potential. How will mitch and abby adapt to their new life? Will their marriage survive? How is mitch handling boat instead of court?
Nothing about this. Everybody is in jail, and they live a happy life….
What happend to the 10 million? What does the fbi say?
Such a disappointment.

Totally artificial "sequel" of the firm, has nothing really to do with it.
And a story that keeps you thinking "ok, some big turn of events will surely come" and all of the sudden it's simply over.
