From beginning to end, Eger's story had me listening acutely to every moment. The soberly yet intensely-described pre-WWII years of close yet critical family relationships with her two sisters and parents are important in grasping the hardships and loss that followed in Auschwitz. Eger tells her story with the same enormous drive and resourcefulness that allowed her to not just survive the Holocaust but to honestly and thoroughly examine her experience over decades afterwards. Every word was seared into my brain while listening. Although the horror is so vivid, Eger often leavens the narration with the blackest of humour - and with moments of incredible tenderness, loyalty and sacrifice. Ruthlessly honest with herself and us, she provides the listener with profoundly revealing and moving examples of human behaviour at the limits of endurance. When describing how, as a psychotherapist, she approached working with very traumatized children and military personnel, she doesn't hide her own fears and uncertainties. Again and again, she emphasizes how learning that she had choices even in the most dire circumstances, is my personal priceless take-away. I know I will listen to this story again.
