An unforgettable memoir about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
“Beautiful and propulsive.... Despite the singularity of [Tara Westover’s] childhood, the questions her book poses are universal: How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?” (Vogue)
“Westover has somehow managed not only to capture her unsurpassably exceptional upbringing, but to make her current situation seem not so exceptional at all, and resonant for many others.” (The New York Times Book Review)
Kritikerstimmen
“A coming-of-age memoir reminiscent of The Glass Castle.” (O: The Oprah Magazine)
“Beautiful and propulsive... [Tara Westover’s] voice is so sui generis it feels in debt to no one.... And despite the singularity of her childhood, the questions her book poses are universal: How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?” (Vogue)
“An amazing story, and truly inspiring. The kind of book everyone will enjoy. It’s even better than you’ve heard.” (Bill Gates)
“Heart-wrenching... a beautiful testament to the power of education to open eyes and change lives.” (Amy Chua, The New York Times Book Review)

A stirring story
A really stirring and well formulated story. Some parts are incredibly sad and violent. The book is very different to anything I read/heart before but in a good way. The beginning is a little lengthy but at the same time gives the necessary context needed to fully grasp the events illustrated towards the end. I dearly hope that young women living in similar circumstances follow suits and are able to liberate themselves like the main character of this story.
In addition, the speaker of the audio book is great! I would recommend the book.

Great.
A powerful story of change, I was completely entranced. The beginning is pretty violent and disturbing and I almost didn't get through it, but I am very glad I did.

Tolles Buch

Is this real?
I stopped reading after the first part. The recounting of one major accident and gruesome injury after the other, supposedly within just a couple of weeks just doesn't seem realistic. Every situation turned into something gruesome and became almost predictible at some point and therefore boring. The people in this family must have magic healing powers if they can so easily and quickly recover after the injuries they endure again and again and again...! I wanted to like the book giving an insight into an extremist religious family's life, but I'm too disappointed by the sensationalism of the violence.

Riveting story of another universe
The riveting story of a Mormon girl's unlikely path towards education, through the harsh, distorted reality of her childhood painted for her by doctrine and psychosis.

Tolle Geschichte, mechanische Stimme
Die Sprecherin erinnert an eine künstliche Vorlesestimme, als würde jedes Wort einzeln ohne Zusammenhang gelesen. Die Geschichte ist im Kontrast dazu faszinierend und emotional. Absolut hörenswert.

Scintillating - I was hooked!
Well written and brilliantly read book- Westover’s story, a harrowing account of her family’s version of ‘normal’ is submitted objectively and believably. Her raw intelligence and hunger to learn is inspiring and the otherworldliness of her family’s practices confronting. I could feel my mind expanding as I listened. Highly recommend this book!

Deep insights into US culture, but no literature
This book is indeed a memoir, but it is not a well crafted, balanced novel. I really enjoyed the last third, the contrasting of Tara's new world of education and knowledge and the world of her parents. However, the first third/half of the book with all its graphic details of accidents felt more like misery lit. There was a lack of deeper reflection about what happened and in what context. I greatly appreciate Tara's honesty about her own destiny and I am glad that she was brave enough to share it with the world.

loved it
Captivating, addictive, heartbreaking but also uplifting. I have so much respect for this woman, for her struggles, for her ability to recall all the details for the beautiful language of how she wrote her story and the way she tried to analyse it. I just loved it
