The reason why it's a shame is the end, in the 1st and in this book the author emphazises that in this new world the main characters can't allow themselves to make dumb decisions, because it always causes very bad situations to happen.
The decision of the protagonists love interest to go out alone just because something bad happened to her is a very dumb decision and the protagonist not pointing that out right away is also a very dumb decision.
For me they both pretty much died at the end of this book, so this series also died for me.
