Über diesen Titel
Before he discovered my age, he uncovered my heart.
Bruised and abused, and victim to a loveless household, I shimmered with new life the moment he found me drowning my sorrows in a lake beneath the stars.
A chance encounter. An unspoken connection. I was smitten. He was curious. But, as everyone knew, fate could be decidedly cruel.
He called me Halley, like the comet. I called him Reed. And my best friend? Well… she called him Dad.
Older is a forbidden, slow-burn, age-gap romance standalone, ending in an HEA.

Older by Jennifer Hartmann was my first dive into her work, and it definitely won’t be my last. The cover and blurb immediately gave me Birthday Girl vibes — which happens to be one of my all-time favorites — so I knew I had to give this one a listen. And I’m so glad I did.
This story is a delicious slow burn, heartbreakingly beautiful and poetically written. Hartmann’s writing style pulled me in from the very first chapter — there’s something lyrical about the way she captures emotions, pain, and longing that just hits differently.
Halley is such a beautiful soul — mature beyond her years, shaped by a tragic past that truly broke my heart. She’s strong, yet vulnerable in a way that makes you root for her every step of the way. And then there’s Reed — honestly, one of the best male characters I’ve come across. His inner struggle, his constant battle between doing what’s “right” and what his heart wants, especially when it comes to his daughter, was portrayed so well. My heart ached for him throughout the story.
The chemistry between Halley and Reed was palpable — every conversation, every glance, every stolen moment was filled with tension and emotion. The forbidden age-gap trope was handled beautifully, never feeling forced or cliché. Plus, the 90s nostalgia sprinkled throughout was such a perfect touch, adding depth and atmosphere to their story.
As for the narration, Gideon Frost and Greyson Ash did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. Their voices suited Halley and Reed perfectly, capturing every nuance of emotion — from quiet heartbreak to intense longing. They made the slow burn even more addictive, drawing me deeper into the story with every chapter.
So why 4 stars instead of 5?
1. I really wished for more of Reed’s POV. His character had so much depth, and getting more insight into his thoughts would have made the emotional impact even stronger.
2. When their secret finally came to light, the pacing felt a bit rushed. After such a careful, slow build-up, I wanted more time to sit with the fallout and see Reed and Halley as a couple in the open — something they truly deserved after everything.
3. Tara’s disapproval and selfish behavior dragged on a bit too long for my taste. It started to feel repetitive and slightly frustrating towards the end.
That being said, Older is still a highly recommended listen for anyone who loves a poetic, emotional slow burn with a forbidden romance twist. If you’re a fan of Birthday Girl or age-gap stories done right, this will definitely hit the spot.
I’ll definitely be checking out more from Jennifer Hartmann — her storytelling is simply beautiful.
