Mir gefiel vor allem der Humor, der vom Erzähler perfekt herüber gebracht wurde. Die Geschichte ist sehr fantasievoll. Allerdings kann alles passieren wodurch es keine wirkliche Entwicklung gibt.

If you like really evil villains, painfully naive heroes, colorful side characters and a world painted in strong, dak colours and fine writing you will love this book. It is not without the occassional clichet - but always ironic, playful and just enjoyable. A pity there never was a sequel.

I'm not the biggest fan of Gaiman as a narrator. But the story line is twisting and unexpectingly turning, enriched with likeable characters.

Ich habe Neverwhere schon unzählige Male gelesen. Als Buch, als Hörbuch in Deutsch und Englisch, als Hörspiel der BBC.
Alle sind fast gleichermaßen bezaubernd, spannend, komisch, seltsam und genial. Die deutsche Version (Niemalsland) ist sorgsam synchronisiert und von Stefan Kaminski sehr gut gespielt, aber Neil Gaiman ist neben seinem schriftstellerischen Genius nunmal auch ein hervorragender Sprecher und kann seine eigene Geschichte am nächsten an die Gefühle bringen, die er den Figuren auf den Leib geschrieben hat. Ich gebe 100/100 Punkten mit Sternchen.

Neil Gaiman managed to give urban fantasy a new twist. “Neverwhere” is an incredible hotpot of bizarre characters and events, where the reader/listener is taken on a scary rollercoaster ride through the “underworld” of London. It is not always clear, where this is going, but you will enjoy the ride. It is not just thrilling, it is also outrageously funny at times. As a freebie, you get to listen to Gaiman’s great voice, reading the story to you.

Richard Mayhew, the protagonist, is a decent young guy, a little bit boring and indecisive, but overall nice enough. All of a sudden his cozy little life falls apart, when he helps an injured young girl, collapsed on a sidewalk in London. Not only does his fiancée immediately walk out on him, but he becomes more or less invisible to the rest of his known world. Soon enough he will find out about the “other” London, a city underneath the city, where the wretched souls live, who fell through the cracks. This world is full of shady characters, scoundrels and murderers. You might even meet monsters and angels there. Unfortunately Richard will learn the hard way that scoundrels might be friends and angels foes.

The story is well written and really entertaining. It is a real Gaiman after all.
