Über diesen Titel

When a man’s naked corpse is found strapped to a waterwheel, newly appointed Inspector Haze is called upon to investigate the crime. With the help of American surgeon Captain Redmond, he delves into the life of Frank Darrow, a man who inspired such hatred, his mere death wasn’t enough to satisfy his killer.

Finding few clues and no obvious motive for the murder, Redmond and Haze must peel away the layers of Frank Darrow’s relationships to get to the shocking truth, while also coming to terms with unexpected developments in their own lives.

Perfect for fans of C.S. Harris and Anne Perry.

Really good expansion of the characters and world. Like this book the best of the series so far and would highly recommend. Gets better and better as it goes. There are a lot of heavy themes though so check the warnings if you have any triggers, especially familial.

Best installment of the series so far

I really liked the first book in the series: A crime story set in England in the old days, a bit of culture clash, insights into the restricting boundary conditions when born, in the wrong part of town or, let’s say, as a woman - relatively unbrutal easy listening. But I have no appreciation for a screenplay through which one can see after the first chapter (the culprit, the developments of individual characters, the more or less happy end). In this book the author did just that. Additionally for me it didn’t really help that the narrator tends to overemphasize seemingly dramatic parts. Nonetheless I am drawn to the series which made me listen to the next book. And only so much here: the next was really to my liking!

Again pretty predictable

Attention, contains spoilers.

The story was interesting enough, but the conclusion was somewhat bland.

The love story between Jason and the vicar’s daughter doesn’t feel real, as the reader had not been exposed to a lot of interaction of the two.

The twist of the plot when Jason’s former love interest suddenly shows up and Jason makes her feel at home left me baffled. Overall, I have to say that the author should have delved more into historical facts, Cecilia undertook the voyage from the United States to Great Britain without a maid or any companion, which was unlikely and inappropriate at that time.

Not as thrilling as the last one
