Damon has become a monster...sort of.

Moments before Damon's death, a gelatinous, gluttonous mimic reveals itself to him. Fearing a more gruesome and horrible death down the mimic’s gullet, Damon offers the food in his pack—sandwiches, cookies, and everything else! Encouraged by the (admittedly forced) generosity, the Mimic fuses with Damon, enhancing his body and transforming him into a half-man half-mimic monstrosity.

Once a poor, down-on-his-luck scout, Damon now has new capabilities far beyond anything anyone on Basania has seen before.

The only problem? His new bodymate’s insatiable hunger for cake...and human flesh.

Am relevantesten
Was mich gereizt hat, war die tolle Umsetzung zum Hörbuch. Ich bin ein Fan von LitRPG und habe derer schon viele gehört. Englische und Deutsche. Hier hat klar die Tonumsetzug der Englischen Version die Nase vorn.
Die Geschichte jedoch hat mich nicht überzeugt. Könnte ich, gäbe ich dieses Hörbuch sofort zurück.

The topic has a lot of potential, but it became boring and unbelievable, and too many gaming mechanics were incorporated.

The main narrator is incredible and his co-narrators do a good job too, the female narrator lacks the range required to potray all her assigned characters so some of them sound fairly similar, but that's a minor nitpick as the narration overal is so incredible, it makes other most other audiobooks pale in comparison.

The story on the other hand... oh boy... First of all it's a fantasy world with heavy video game-esque elements. We're talking "Looting corpses per menu" and "Random loot pulls with visual representation of the randomness" type of narrative. You already know if you like that or can at least tolerate.

But it only goes downhill from there. The first part of the story is somewhat competen, if fairly formulalaic.But after that it starts getting so much worse: The story loses track of the time that has passed multiple times. Solutions and random plot developments fall from the sky. Plot details are forgotten and retconned mid chapter. The tone is all over the place. The main character changes his plans on a dime without explanation. Characters personalities are unstable and their relationships change randomly each time they interact. Random scenes and details are included without any relevance and never brought up again. For a few chapters the story gets randomly obsessed with handshakes and basic manners.

Basically the whole thing lacks any kind of structure...

The whole book feels like a friend of yours telling you in excruciating detail about their recent Skyrim playthrough while they are stoned to the gills...

If you're really bored or a fan of the Narrators, it might be okay, otherwise don't bother...

Great Narration, Terrible Narrative

I really liked the audio / readers / sound effects.
But the story is as shallow as the magic system.
Everybody acts like a NPC.
The only interesting character is the mimic.
Except that people are acting like in a game but perm dead is enabled but nobody cares. People are dying left and right but no big deal.
Will not continue this series didn’t hock me up.

Look, it’s a good premix and somewhat solid story, The language used and the pacing are aimed at teenagers. The over explanation of very basic mechanics is also aimed at people new to the genre.
Fans of “he who fights with monsters” or the work of Dakota Krout will find themselves missing story layers and wit.
