"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes.

A do-over.

This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path.

Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries-old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a little while.

That is, until I learn what the house really is: something I never would've thought possible.

As my new life begins, a couple of things become immediately clear: Forty isn't too old for adventure. Not by half. It is too old to take crap from anyone, however, or care what people think.

I had no idea how incredibly freeing that could be. Or how dangerous this new life would become.

I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.

Had to put reading speed to 0.75 at times in the beginning, the last few chapters were okay in 0.95

in 100% speed the narrator is really truely insufferable.

The story is worth it though. And considering that I normally stop rather soon if I have the slightest Issue with the "voice actor", that is worth really a lot.

I don't want to spoil the story.
But for everyone that ever read YA and thought "if she weren't a literal kid there would be no problem' For all of those this story will be a pleasure nearly all around (narrator, again... argh, please make a version with a different one?)

Truth be told, I listened tree times to this story. So you can imagine I really liked the speaker an the content.

I found it unexpectedly funny and charming and so true in many points.
Easy to listen to, something to switch off and get lost in.

I don't know what apocalyptic hell LA is, but I don't want to live in a world were all man are testosterone fueled beasts and woman are all horney rabbits that need to have a man.
Single woman that just want to have a job and a nice life seam to just not exist in this world.

On the other hand, the strange social quirks can be charming. The arrogance of the protagonist was annoying. Because we are stuck in her sexist head, we get the world through an irritating filter. But her interactions with other people can be interesting because of everybody's social quirks.
I liked the old Irish granny. She was a lot of fun. Same for the butler.

I liked the soft magic system set by the sleeping house. Feels like old folktales.

Differently to other reviewers her, I had no problem with the speaker. I understood her without trouble. No complaints here.

Overall, I liked the story, disliked the protagonist, liked some side characters, and liked the magical aspects of the world building.

not a fan of the rampant sexism

I just managed listening for two hours - but I never got used to the speaker... so I had to quit.
Also the story didn't really catch me. But this was my first novel by KF Breene narrated by Nicole Poole... so maybe this is just not my thing.

A for me new angle on the genre with the whole "midlife" content, but that makes it interesting.

On the negative side:
1. Too short
2. At times lends too much from YA Paranomal Romance
