From the author of the New York Times best-selling novels The Handmaid’s Tale - now an Emmy Award-winning Hulu original series - and Alias Grace, now a Netflix original series.

Imprisoned by walls of their own construction, here are three people, each in midlife, in midcrisis, forced to make choices - after the rules have changed. Elizabeth, with her controlled sensuality, her suppressed rage, is married to the wrong man. She has just lost her latest lover to suicide. Nate, her gentle, indecisive husband, is planning to leave her for Lesje, a perennial innocent who prefers dinosaurs to men. Hanging over them all is the ghost of Elizabeth's dead lover...and the dizzying threat of three lives careening inevitably toward the same climax.

There is no doubt that M.Atwood is a masterful writer. Her prose is unique, delves deep into the intricate subleties of the english language and is full of quirks and original twists.
Her three main characters are original, messed-up and very far from perfect.
However, I did struggle a bit to get through this book. There were very long passages diving into Lesjes past that seemed overly detailed for not contributing to the storyline and verged on boring. The other two characters are mostly unlikable and you want to shake all three of them and shout: „get a grip!“. There was - at least for me - no real conclusion, no story arch and no real ending. One ends the book and shrugs: what now??

Vague and a bit boring
