Life 3.0 is a fascinating book giving an outlook of the wide range of opportunities and possible pitfalls of current and future ai system.

I especially liked how the possibility of super human general artificial intelligence is looked upon from different angles and how the possible outcomes are described.

In comparison to Nick Bostrom‘s book „Superintelligence“ (another impressive & thought provoking book) this book takes a broader perspective. Whereas Nick Bostrom focuses in depth on the control issue of super human agi, Max Tegmark‘s book mentions this specific challenge as one of many issues when considering the implications of future ai system.

I totally agree with the author of this book, that the work on ensuring beneficial ai is an important topic. In my view probably at least as important as having safety procedures and communication channels to avoid accidential nuclear war.

Hopefully, humanity succeeds in making future (super) human level general artificial intelligence systems robust and beneficial, leading to „tears of joy“ in sentient beings instead of e.g. driving us extinct due to some final goal not aligned with our human goals (whatever they are, but getting extinct definately isn‘t).

In summary the book is great to read / great to listen to for anybody interested in the implications of current and future ai systems.
