Inhaltsangabe

Rejected by a sister who has allowed her new status as wife to Mr. Bingley to make her proud, Elizabeth Bennet goes to her uncle's estate in Derbyshire, ostensibly to assist her cousin in her introduction to society. In reality, Elizabeth feels there is nothing left for her in the neighborhood of her birth.

Her uncle's estate is small, and Elizabeth must work while there, and though she finds her tasks easy to bear. She quickly becomes close to her young cousin and uncle, though her aunt is a hard, demanding woman, who seems to hold a grudge against Elizabeth. But she also meets many friends, including the daughter of an earl, and the handsome friend of her sister Jane's new husband, a Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

As Elizabeth is slowly pulled from her melancholy, new vistas open up to her, and she realizes that she can still have everything she has ever wished to have. But the jealousy of a woman who is no friend of her courtship with a wealthy man threatens her newfound happiness, and the coming of a sister who rejected her has the potential to once again disrupt Elizabeth's life and destroy her future.

A pick me girl....

... Lizzy - oh no!!

There she is: always making snide little comments about other woman (or just thinking them). Admiring Darcy but being coy about it because she is "below" in station....

She always brings up Ms Bingley to tell how she is not like her. Embarrassing. And it gets worse, even after her engagement at an assembly she is always focused on Caroline and "amused" about her behaviour. But a person who is secure in herself does not care about such shenanigans. This "Lizzy" claims to not care about society but there is little else she ACTUALLY seems to care about. The author clearly has no concept how a well adjusted woman actually sees other women. And everything is so unsubtle. They tell each other how ridiculous Ms Bingley is all the time.
She (and an aunt) are the "big baddies", that is all you need to know.

She has no compassion for Mary marrying a man she finds disgusting and her disparaging comments against her (and her other sisters) are so little in the "spirit" of Elisabeth that she is actually a different person. Too often, when she has an interaction with her cousin she ends it in her mind with a dig against one of her sisters.
She is.... a not very likable, different person.

The "not enjoying shopping"... not a fortune hunter... the not like other girls energy is strong.

In most variations that I am disappointed in, it is a Darcy that is mostly angry and mopey (to the point of abusive). Here he is neither proud nor does he have any prejudice. I really do not understand why it is not a regency (romance?) novel just with different names.

A problem with the audiobook is also the narrator. She has a good voice and nice accent. But the way how she stresses words is distracting. Especially how she ends sentences. A very weird speech pattern.

I skipped a lot in this book. It just was so petty. At least it was for free. This author has lost my good opinion... and once it is lost...
