Über diesen Titel

The English-language debut of one of the most thrilling and accomplished young Mexican writers

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize

Winner of the Internationaler Literaturpreis

The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse - by a group of children playing near the irrigation canals - propels the whole village into an investigation of how and why this murder occurred. Rumors and suspicions spread. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters that most would write off as utterly irredeemable, forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village.

Like Roberto Bolano’s 2666 or Faulkner’s greatest novels, Hurricane Season takes place in a world filled with mythology and violence - real violence, the kind that seeps into the soil, poisoning everything around: it’s a world that becomes more terrifying and more terrifyingly real the deeper you explore it.

This book is not for the faint of heart, it’s full of scenes of violence, particularly sexual violence, and misogyny and homophobia. That said, it gives a powerful portrait of a social world shaped by the shadow of the oil industry, drug trade, and prostitution. It’s brutal, but compelling. The translation also deserves praise. There are some moments when the slang and profanity sound a little clichéd in English, but on the whole the translator succeeds in creating an effective voice for the novel.

Unfortunately, the readers (there are several) don’t do the novel justice. Two of them in particular (the male reader and the female reader who narrates the chapters focused on Norma) put the emphasis on the wrong words in their sentences so often that it sounds like they don’t even understand the words they’re reading. At some points it was as bad as a local radio ad, I honestly had reconstruct the sentences in my mind to figure out what in the world they meant. Audible does a disservice to good books when it hires such incompetent readers. If you’re going to read this book, I’d recommend that you read it in print or get the ebook, this recording was a disappointment.

Disturbing but powerful book, awful readers

It was a great, disturbing read. The way the audiobook was crafted was fantastic, with multiple narrators. The book itself was also really good, just not a complete 5 stars, even though that also may be my fault, and not the book's fault, since I had gotten bad news the day I finished it, and that may have influenced how I felt towards the ending. So that's my disclaimer.
It's still a great book, and I definitely recommend it. You just need to be the right audience for it. There are disturbing themes that may be triggering to some, and some really do show up on and off throughout the whole book quite frequently. So I would look that up, if I had certain triggers, since I don't want to spoil it here, for those, who want to go into it blind.
I also read the book physically with the audiobook at the same time, but if you're also like that, I'd like to tell you that certain phrases, etc, have been changed, so that's something to think about. I may just listen to it, if that's something that would take you out of the story.
So those are my disclaimers, warnings, etc. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, which is why I'm refraining from saying anything that isn't in the description.
Have a good day, everyone. And stay healthy.❤️
