NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED AND THE INDEPENDENT • Ranking alongside George R. R. Martin as a groundbreaking master of fantasy, Robin Hobb delivers the second book in her long-awaited Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

The harrowing adventures of FitzChivalry Farseer and his enigmatic friend the Fool continue in Robin Hobb’s triumphant follow-up to Fool’s Assassin. But Fool’s Quest is more than just a sequel. With the artistry and imagination her fans have come to expect, Hobb builds masterfully on all that has gone before, revealing devastating secrets and shocking conspiracies that cast a dark shadow over the history of Fitz and his world—a shadow that now stretches to darken all future hope.

Long ago, Fitz and the Fool changed the world, bringing back the magic of dragons and securing both the Farseer succession and the stability of the kingdom. Or so they thought. But now the Fool is near death, maimed by mysterious pale-skinned figures whose plans for world domination hinge upon the powers the Fool may share with Fitz’s own daughter.

Distracted by the Fool’s perilous health, and swept up against his will in the intrigues of the royal court, Fitz lets down his guard . . . and in a horrible instant, his world is undone and his beloved daughter stolen away by those who would use her as they had once sought to use the Fool—as a weapon.

But FitzChivalry Farseer is not without weapons of his own. An ancient magic still lives in his veins. And though he may have let his skills as royal assassin diminish over the years, such things, once learned, are not so easily forgotten.

Now enemies and friends alike are about to learn that nothing is more dangerous than a man who has nothing left to lose.

I love the whole realm of the Elderings series and Robin Hobb is brilliant, but the narrations are not good. This book is narrated by Elliott Hill (I hope my spelling is correct), I've listened other books by him and enjoyed them a lot, but not this one. Half of the characters sound like evil German snobs. At least the pronunciation of names/places is in line with most of the previous narrations. Such a shame.

Amazing book, terrible narration

Robin Hobb's world and her characters are fascinating and I love her books. I read the whole series and listened to the other parts of the audiobooks that are realised with other speakers. In this book the speaker is listenable to as long as he talks for the narrator or the main charakter. As soon as he takes the role of a noble however his speech gets so nasal and snobbish - no matter what kind of noble is concerned - that the true character of the person is nearly omitted. This becomes especially evident with the characters of Malta and Reyn, but also earlier in the book with other characters.

wonderful book, unappealing narrator

I love the entire series. Some passages drag on a bit, yes, but they are still told masterfully. So a full set of stars for the story.

The narrator however does not do the characters justice. He apparently does not know the books that came before. Why does careful, quiet and fair Dutiful sound like an arrogant, pompous ass? Why does young, passionate, thoughtful Reyn sound like an arrogant, pompous ass? (Both are "kings", I guess.) And why, oh why, does the Fool, a slender gender bender that can pass himself off as male or female, have a voice like the cookie monster?! And don't get me started on the accents. Baddies all sound Russian. Sigh. Servants all come from working-class Liverpool. Sigh. And, worst of all, the Fool has been given a strange kind of German-Russian pretend accent that is not rooted in anything we know about the character (and badly done).

I have bought almost all audio books of the series as well as the Kindle versions. I like not having to stop reading when I am using my hands or out walking, so continue with the audio book where I left off with the Kindle and vice versa. But I am absolutely not buying the next book as an audiobook, but will read all of it the old-fashioned way. Otherwise I will spend way too much time shouting at the narrator to STOOP READING HIM LIKE THAAAT!

Please, please school your narrators on the characters they are reading, Audible! Let one narrator read all of it, or else invest in a session with the author or something, but please just let them know who they are when they are reading. And don't let them do accents. At all. Ever.

The narrator ruins so much

It is utterly unbearable to hear the continuing story of those wonderful lands being read by someone, who apparently hates all of the characters, portaying them all as whiny, disagreeable beings. His use of an undefinable mix of a fake french-german-russian-ish accent, while making him sound like a wheezing, pathetic old man with bronchitis when portaying the fool is an insult to this character and to all who care about these stories. Maybe someone should have let him know, that the fool is not called that because he is an idiot. Also, if a reader chooses any kind of accent, he should be sure that it fits the character and that he can actually master the accent he chooses and when chosen, then stick to one of them. Half the characters sound like heavy smokers with throat cancer and utterly fake accents and dialects. Unbearable and disappointing.

What a sad waste of a good story

The story moves along VERY slowly.
The speaker is just horrible. He is extremely eager to demonstrate how many different accents he is capable of, but that is just totally unnecessary and annoying.
As another commentator has already noted: The voice and accent that he gives to the fool are just atrocious.
The same is true for the voice he gives to Shade and some other characters. The women sound as if he was making fun of them. Can't he let these people just converse normally????

OK and slow story, but horrible speaker

One of the more boring books in the series, but the narrator is the worst. Prepare to have every character you love butchered and made sound like an arrogant idiot. I cannot explain how annoyed and angry I am about this. Wish there was an alternative narrator.
