I was very surprised to find that the audio book hooked me almost immediately. The characters are very well fleshed out and there are new things to learn about both of them right up to the end, which keeps them interesting. They're both very flawed and feel real. The story itself isn't grand (in the sense that it plays in the same town and there isn't the world to save or something) and focused on Zane and Roach, but the few side characters are exceptionally well done, too. The relationship is the main focus and while there isn't much else happening, it kept me interested the whole time. Not to mention the character development is well done, they really grew on me. They do fight like teenagers sometimes and are occasionally drama queens, but it didn't bother me at all. They do have reasons to act like they do.
The story was sad at times, but never overly so. There are unexpectedly sweet moments. Everything being cliché was my greatest fear about this book, but entirely unwarranted in my opinion.
It was a very comforting read/hear, despite the at times heavy themes throughout, and very spicy in just the right amount; without feeling like the explicit scenes are randomly thrown in or stalling the story for no purpose.
All in all, this book was one of the luckiest random finds I've ever made - it was far deeper and better than I ever expected and I will revisit this many times for sure. Is it the most profound book in the world? No, but it doesn't need to be and I had an absolute blast throughout. Not many audiobooks have me listening till 1am. This did.
