It was a crime of senseless violence. On a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse, an elderly farmer was bludgeoned to death, his wife left to die with a noose around her neck. As if this didn't present enough problems for Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman's last word, his only tangible clue, were foreign. If publicized, they could be the match that would inflame Sweden's already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.

With this case - unlike the situation with his ex-wife, his estranged daughter, or the young prosecutor who has piqued his interest - Wallander feels he has a problem he can handle. He quickly becomes obsessed with solving the crime before the already tense situation explodes, though it will require all of his talent to do so.

Mankell, wie man ihn kennt und liebt. Wallander wie immer der Polizist, der viele Hürden überwinden muss und kaum in der Lage ist, den erlösenden Erfolg überhaupt als solchen wahrzunehmen. Mankell ist ein brillanter Erzähler, nuancenreich und glaubwürdig. Faceless Killers ist vielleicht nicht sein brilliantestes Werk, aber Fans dürfen es nicht verpassen, und es hat durchaus das Potenzial, den ein oder anderen Leser/Hörer als Fan zu gewinnen.

The book was first published in the early 1990s, and it shows. Some everyday details are clearly dated, e.g. Wallander using a typewriter and a car phone at work, writing cheques and listening to a tape while driving. There are also some behavioural patterns that would be considered more than a little problematic today, like Wallander's excessive drinking, his sending a subordinate (female!) police officer to take care of his dry cleaning or his making a drunken and inappropriate pass at a married prosecutor (and her being okay with that after receiving some flowers from him). What I find even more interesting is how often Wallannder comments on how times and society are changing and how hard he finds it to adjust. This goes to show that regretting the "good old days" isn't a new phenomenon. Just like Wallander (and probably Mankell) did in 1990, most people living in 2025 (myself included) find it hard to adjust to the new world we find ourselves in. I guess those "good old days" only ever existed in our imagination.

"Faceless Killers" is the first in the Kurt Wallander series, and it still works as a police procedural. The case - a gruesome double murder that leads to another random killing - is interesting, and the police investigation is solid and believable. The solution to the case is a bit disappointing, but on the whole I felt well entertained.

The narrator's a good fit for the main character, even though (or because?) he sometimes makes some of the characters sound slightly drunk.

I read the complete Wallander series about 25 years ago, but don't really remember any of the books. I enjoyed listening to "Faceless Killers" enough to want to check out the sequel. For the time being the whole series is free for Audible members, so that's a plus.
