I‘m struggling very hard to follow the plot for two reasons:
The story in the first few chapters is incredibly jumbled and all over the place (it almost requires you to be familiar with all of the stories that came before). So far, the has not been a lot of hell in ‚elminster in hell‘. The second reason is what makes this even worse, sadly. The presentation is monotonous to such an extent, that it‘s nearly impossible to follow the constant jumps in scenery, flashbacks and characters.
