Über diesen Titel

For the first time, discover the unedited truth about the Duggars, the traditional Christian family that captivated the nation on TLC’s hit show 19 Kids and Counting. Jill Duggar and her husband Derick are finally ready to share their story, revealing the secrets, manipulation, and intimidation behind the show in this “no-holds barred” (People) instant New York Times bestseller.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines. She didn’t protest the strict model of patriarchy that her family followed, which declares that men are superior, that women are expected to be wives and mothers and are discouraged from attaining a higher education, and that parental authority over their children continues well into adulthood, even once they are married.

But as Jill got older, married Derick, and they embarked on their own lives, the red flags became too obvious to ignore.

For as long as they could, Jill and Derick tried to be obedient family members—but now they’re raising a family of their own, and they’re done with the secrets. Thanks to time, tears, therapy, and blessings from God, they have the strength to share their journey. Theirs is a “complicated, remarkably relatable story of faith and family loyalty” (Salon) and a moving example of how to find healing through honesty.

all of it

Fesselnde Lebensgeschichte

I am very impressed by Jill‘s personal growth and mindful reflection on her life! Go Girl!!!

I had to stop listening at times because it made me so angry. What a strong story and strong woman Jill is.

Story

It's awesome to hear Jill's voice, I didn't expect her to read it. Following up the stories, there is nothing new in the book though.

I listened in one go because it was so interesting BUT it is very dissapointing too.

Why are there other people on the book cover? It is just Jill's POV and voice.

Jill is STILL running with lies.
- Excusing her mother's behaviour in the entire story (as if she was just a victim too, not a homeschool teacher and entrusted person to young children and responsible to protect them)
- nothing about the physical abuse by both parents and others in the home
- The report that was filed under the freedom of information act (and we all know, if it was not their own son/brother) would have raised hell to get it published)
- being a trained midwife (she is not or was not at the time she referred to in the book)
- the phony 'mission work' they did and how they tried to get other people to join their cult
- nothing on the disgusting comments her mother in-law made in the past
- I will never forget the robo call Michelle made about trans people, fear mongering, while hiding a pedophile in her own home
- I sadly miss a heartfelt apology to the entire LGBTQ+ community Jill and especially Derrick attacked. I will never forget or forgive Derrick for openly attacking a trans minor and in this book Jill calls it 'speaking his mind', no honey, it was harrassment and you would call it that, if your family was attacked like that by any other group.
- This book makes clear that Jill only cares, if it affects herself or her family.
- Not really anything about children being kept away from higher education and exploiting kids and calling childlabor 'homeschooling'.
- nothing on Jill being raised to be a mom and housewife, but yet still baby wearing her children wrong and therefore endangering them, for multiple years.
- The greed by the family for anything concerning money and influence
- The racism and ignorance by JB Duggar, that was even seen in the show
- nothing on sexualizing young children, by telling them they dress immodestly
- the irony of Jill being scared of shootings, while her family open carries weappons, even around small children.

So yeah, it was a good listen, but I expected more... more honesty and more self reflection.

good listen, but I expected more
