 In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho. A shocked Jericho finds that not only does life exist on other planets, but that every civilization in the galaxy has experienced extinction events at precisely the same time. Armed with that disconcerting information (and a little help from a grand unifying theory), the alien informs Jericho, almost dismissively, that the primary goal of modern science is to discover why God has behaved as he has and to determine his methods.

This is a brilliant text full of scientific details (from the 2000 AD-perspective) and very many thought-provoking questions and ideas.

Imagine am alien, far ahead in science compared with its human counterpart, taking the existence of God as a scientific fact and the resulting reaction of the atheist human. Or the human trying to explain the perception our race has of aliens with the help of “Star Trek” videos (TOS of course)…

So it is a great book and when I first read it ten years ago in print it fascinated me so much that I bought more and more of this intelligent author. Even though he tends to overstretch the closure at the end of his books and his heroes are people first and sometimes even too much of it: he writes great books. And IMHO this one is his best on the intellectual level.

Where I have a bit of a problem however is the emotional content: the narrating hero is dying of cancer and gloom and doom seem to colour this book. On this emotional level it strongly reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's “Childhood End”

The narrators voice and intonation fits the emotional pattern. IMHO a bit too much suffering, especially if you compare it with the introduction given by Robert J. Sawyer himself: now there is a man with humour and a twinkle in his … voice.

But still: this is a brilliant book, and it should be in any serious SciFi-collection.
