Die Story ist inhaltlich spannend, gut geschrieben und nimmt den Leser mit in die frühe Tortaller Welt (die in den ersten Büchern von T. Pierce mit Alanna von Trebond so wunderbar eröffnet wurde); man muß aber keinesfalls die Alanna-Bände gelesen haben, es ist eine unabhängige Geschichte.
Ein bisschen tortaller Mittelalter, immer ein Funke Magie, welcher Art auch er sei, Kämpfe und - da die Hauptperson Rebecca Cooper ein "Dog", also Polizist Tortall's ist - die Suche nach der Auflösung des jeweiligen Kriminalfalls sind die unterhaltsamen Bestandteile der 3 Beka Bücher.
Und eine kleine Prise Liebe ist auch dabei: aber wirklich nur ein bisschen :-)
Sprachlich ist das Englisch eine kleine Herausforderung; bis man sich eingehört hat sind vor allem die "Spezialausdrücke" (mit denen Tamora Pierce das tortaller Mittelalter transporieren möchte??) wie z. B. Cove für Mann/ Kerl etwas anstrengend. Mit ein bisschen Geduld findet man sich aber in all Dies ein, und dann macht das Zuhören wirklich Spaß.
