Ted Wallace is an old, sour, womanising, cantankerous, whisky-sodden beast of a failed poet and drama critic, but he has his faults too. Fired from his newspaper, months behind on his alimony payments and disgusted with a world that undervalues him, Ted seeks a few months repose and free drink at Swafford Hall, the country mansion of his old friend Lord Logan. But strange things have been going on at Swafford. Miracles. Healings. Phenomena beyond the comprehension of a mud-caked hippopotamus like Ted. A surprising story by a wonderful storyteller, narrated by the author himself. The characters are wonderfully British, wholly believable and interesting. The story is as realistic as it is mystical, and injected with delightful humour without slipping into comedy or nonsense. I used to quite like Stephen Fry, but now I have become a fan.

Hilarious

Stephen Fry brings to life a collection of characters out of an alternate Wodehouse universe. The story unfolds like a kinky Blandings tale, the main protagonist Ted Wallace Surveys the world with warmth in his black heart and a twinkle in his bloodshot eye, and takes us along for the ride.

Like a kinky Wodehouse

This is honestly the most witty and brilliantly worded book I know. Apart from the wonderfully weird story, Stephen Fry invented SO many clever similes, curses and descriptions that made me snigger my way through the book. His bourish anti hero Ted Wallace is compellingly rude, sexist, cynical and wise, yet at 66 he struggles to solve the mystery of his best friend's family in childlike wonder and curiousity. Noone else could have created this tale of human hopes, weaknesses and peculiarities in such perfect comedic timing. Definitely Stephen Fry's masterpiece, and just as excellently performed.

Brilliant, witty, weird, clever!

I know Mr. Fry from his readings of Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes and loved his abilities of his performance. This was first time I heard him read a book of his own.
Chapeau
There is not much more to say other than Thank you.

Steven Fry is a league of his own

Audio quality and Reader are excellent

The story is much much too vulgar for my taste.

Disgusting
