Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Die Geschichte, die Tiefe und die Bildkraft der Darstellung. Ein wunderbares Buch mit eigener Erzählungsart.

Ein wunderschönes Buch

I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks but hardly ever on this level. The story, the proza, the narrator (Zach Appleman does a great job with this book, I have to check if he narrated more books! Talented!!), it’s all impressively beautiful. A job very well done. 🥰

Simple wonderful. 6 stars if I could.

A pity that this story did not get a better reader. The pronunciation of German and French names and expressions is bad such as "Fjührer" instead of Führer.

Touching story but unfortunately not well read

I loved the story. It pulls you right in. Beautiful language and imagery.
My only criticism is the speaker's awful French when he mispronounces names and places. That really gets in the way.

awesome story

Marie-Laure lives with her father on Paris. When she goes blind as a child he builds her a miniature model of the city to help her navigate and give her some independence. She loves the sea and is fascinated by it. As her father works in the Natural History Museum she has every chance to learn more.
Werner is German, living in an orphanage with his sister. He loves the radio and learns how to work with it and repair it quickly.
When the Second World War starts their lives change. Marie-Laure and her father have to leave Paris and start living with her great-uncle and his housemaid by the sea. After her father is arrested, Marie-Laure starts to help the housemaid work in the resistance. Werner, on the other hand, is send to an NS-school for his technical skills and later forced to join the war.
Close to the end of the war, Walter and Laure meet after their lives have been intertwined for quite some time without them knowing each other.
I liked the story because it is told from different view points. I also liked that they showed how much people contributed to the war in every aspect possible. I liked that Marie -Laure is the heroine and Werner only a helper. But I had sometimes trouble to follow the story because it is quite long and all the different perspectives change often.

Marie-Laure - heroine

Having started numerous books by various authors and casting them, with bored frustration, unfinished aside, finally, thankfully I came across this book. Even before I finished the book I gave it as a gift to two friends.
It is beautifully written. The imagery he uses to describe the blind girls world is rich, evocative. The story is both gentle and compelling. The characters are interwoven and more than likeable. Deservedly, this book gained the author the Pulitzer prize.
And last but not least, the audio book is beautifully narrated by Zach Appelman. A voice I could never tire of.

What a beautiful book.
