Two incredible sisters in a very bad war
A fascinating, merciless, incredible story about two sisters who are risking her life for others to survive in a very bad war. The book opened my eyes on how bad war could become and what it does to people... Do what it could do to us and why we need to prevent it from happening again.
More than highly recommended to read or listen.

Herzzerreißend
Ein tolles Buch über starke Frauen. Unweigerlich stellt man sich die Frage, wie man selbst wohl gehandelt hätte.

Absoluter Tearjerker!
Sehr bewegende und emotionale Story, die wohl gerade verfilmt wird. Mich haben die Charaktere sehr ergriffen und auch die Erzählstrukur ist sehr 'gripping'-- ein tolles Buch und Hörbuch!

Wow! Kristin Hannah!!! You are a phantastic writer!
This is a heartbreaking story about the endless cruelty of wars, about powerful love and heroic people who have the inner strength to face even the meanest adversity to do good. It is magnificently told, and beautifully read and spoken. The fact that it is written by a woman and that the two main characters are female should not stamp the book as "women's litterature". I think that this kind of classification is largely outdated although i could probably agree that a certain "women's litterature" does exist, as does some "men's litterature". And in actual fact those books are no litterature but stories full of klischees, which "the Nightingale" is certainly not.
It is an especially important book right now, as we have so much cruelty going on right now in different parts of the world, and more and more voices are getting loud, war mongering broadly. There is nothing good in war and nothing good in evil behaviour.

Great and heartbreaking story
Although I had decided a long time ago that I wouldn't burden myself with WW2 stories anymore, I gave this book a chance. And I am glad I did. But we warned: It will break your heart in so many ways.
Soon all of the war time memories will be lost and so few women in my surroundings talked about their experiences during the war. So it's a good thing that someone captured some of those terrifying memories for generations to come.
My only problem was with the speaker. She switched between a strong American accent and a fake French accent which felt very unpleasant but even worse was that I sometimes had the feeling that Apple's Siri was reading this story to me. Not really what I am looking for in an audio book.

Eine bemerkenswerte und berührende Geschichte
erzählt aus dem dunklen Kapitel des 2. Weltkriegs. Authentisch vorgetragen, fesselnd, traurig, doch lebensbejahend. Absolut hörenswert.

A Worldwar II Story of a Different Kind
Kristin Hannah’s “The Nightingale” is simply a great book. It is a deeply moving and haunting tale of the heroism of two sisters in war torn France. It truthfully captures the incredible cruelty and misery of world war II, but it does so by watching the suffering and the despair of everyday people and how some of them show heroism and compassion in their struggle to survive.
It is a heartbreaking story and Kristin Hannah manages to tell it in gripping prose, full of emotion, passion and its magic puts a spell on you. This is partly Polly Stone’s merit, she does an outstanding job reading it.
“The Nightingale” is the story of Isabelle and Vianne in German-occupied France. They lost their mother at a young age and their father, an estranged alcoholic, rejects them completely. Completely different in character and ideals Isabelle and Vianne set out on separate paths to fight the Nazi regime. Isabelle joins the Resistance and smuggles downed allied pilots through the Pyrenees to Spain, while Vianne tries to hide Jewish orphans to save them from certain death.
This is not just a good book, it is an important book. It confronts us with the ugliest face of man, but it also shows us beauty and love.
