Über diesen Titel
To hear that some impoverished girl you met a couple of months ago and with whom you have been in close company for a few days is now your affianced bride?
Incredible! Elizabeth Bennet is surprised and delighted when Fitzwilliam Darcy, a wealthy and handsome bachelor from Derbyshire, declares himself to her. Still more surprising are her own feelings for him; a chance overheard conversation had changed her first impression of him enough to see the good man he was…and she had fallen in love.
Having made an unexpected choice, Darcy is certain marital felicity awaits him. Alas, a calamity of unexpected events conspire preventing him from honoring the promises he has made to his intended bride.
What should have been the happiest day of both Darcy and Elizabeth’s lives becomes the source of their deepest heartbreak. Elizabeth is left standing at the altar, her bridegroom having failed to arrive and Darcy is left bereft amid the wreckage of his hopes and dreams.
Only one thing grows more certain each day: Darcy loves Elizabeth, and wishes more than anything to forge a future between them. But can abandonment be forgiven? Will they successfully overcome the forces aligned against them to build a happily-ever-after from the ruins of the past?

Abandoned at the altar
While Jane is ill Elizabeth stays with her at Netherfield. She is surprised when Fitzwilliam Darcy, who insulted her at the Meryton Assembly, declares himself to her and asks for her hand in marriage. Due to an overheard conversation some days ago Elizabeth's feelings for Darcy had already started to change and soon she realises that she is in love with the gentleman. Darcy expects resentment from his family but is determined to fight for his love. But on their intended wedding day Elizabeth is left abandoned at the altar, her bridegroom is nowhere to be found, she is left humiliated and heartbroken.
Due to unexpected events and family crises Darcy is not able to honour his promise to Elizabeth but she is constantly in his thoughts, leaving him equally heartbroken.
Will there ever be a second chance for their love? Will Elizabeth be able to forgive Darcy that he abandoned her on the day that should have been the happiest day for them both? And will they overcome the obstacles that separated them?
The book was very well written by the author Julie Cooper. Her books are always excellent and a delight to read, this one is no exception.
From the blurb and the prologue I had anticipated much heartache but fortunately for all gentle souls as I am one there are many sweet scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth before their hopes of a future together are (for a time) crushed. There is definitely plenty of heartache in the second half of the books and there were some moments when I was very emotional but fortunately ODC was able to feel the great love in the first half of the book and they therefore knew that it was worth every fight.
What I really love is Darcy's love and devotion and his persistence to have Elizabeth, despite all circumstances, as his bride. He is willing to overcome all obstacles, to try everything.
Elizabeth on her part is at times not as steadfast and secure as Darcy in her emotions but I find this understandable given the situation that she was the abandoned one who had to face the humiliation and heartbreak of being jilted. Therefore she first had to find trust again. And, while they are separated, she also learns about some other occurrences which leave her trusting Darcy's sincerity according to their relationship. But you need to read that on your own.
My hero of the book is definitely Georgiana. I really love the way she finally is the one to secure her brother's happiness, especially considering all the other things in which she was involved beforehand.
And I dearly love the image of Mrs Bennet as a loving mother, not only to Elizabeth but also to Georgiana ❤️.
There are no real villains in this story (besides Wickham, but this should be nothing new for you). The “evil” persons mean well but execute their help in a bad way. Therefore they do unwillingly and unintentionally more harm than help and keep ODC apart and extend their heartbreak.
The audiobook was narrated by Gill Mills. She was a new narrator for me but it was not long and I really enjoyed her performance. She has a lively, expressive way to tell the story. It took me some time to get used to her Darcy voice (yes, I'm a bit particular in that respect) but in the end I enjoyed her narration very much. I hope she will narrate other Jaff stories in the future.
If you like to know why Darcy abandons Elizabeth at the altar and how he tries to convince her that he is, despite that, worthy of her love, you should read this excellent book.
I highly recommend it.
