Let me start by saying that I love Mike Gayle as a writer and have enjoyed each of his novels in the past 25 years. He is a brilliant author - insightful, original, playful and wickedly funny. I can recommend all of his novels apart from this one. I don’t understand how one of his books could go so terribly wrong. The characters are uninspired flat personas and every supposedly new twist was completely predictable. We were listening to the audiobook on holiday and ended up playing a game of cliché bingo. And shockingly enough: they were all in there. This was quite an annoying waste of time.
Read „Turning thirty“ / „My legendary girlfriend“ / „The museum of ordinary people“ or „The man I think I know“ instead.

Full of predictable developments and clichés

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.
Nach der vorigen schlechten Bewertung, bin ich vom Schlimmsten ausgegangen, wurde jedoch vom Autor nicht enttäuscht. Nach 2/3 des Buches hatte ich das Gefühl, dass wir uns dem Ende der Geschichte nähern, jedoch gab es dann nicht nur einen, sondern sogar zwei Plottwists, die ich so nicht erwartet habe. Die Sprecherin gefiel mir gut, mit dem Sprecher bin ich jedoch nicht warm geworden - zu viele lange Pausen, US-Akzent furchtbar intoniert, Sprechgeschwindigkeit und Betonung oft unpassend. Mein Tipp: Abspielgeschwindigkeit auf 1,2 erhöhen. Alles in allem bin ich mit dem ausgegebenem Credit sehr zufrieden. Es gab sicher schon bessere Romane des Autors, dennoch habe ich mich gut unterhalten gefühlt.
