Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three-year-old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

Soul Eater is book one of Monstrous, a post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. It is a m/m love story and contains sexually explicit content and graphic depictions of torture and violence.

As you might have guessed from the title, I know and love the books. And now we got the cherry on top: Michel Lesley narrating. It took me a bit to get used to Danny’s accent, but seeing as he’s supposed to be from Louisiana, it fit him perfectly. Wyn’s voice on the other hand was… perfect. Excellent. That growl gives me all the best shivers 🥰 the story itself is a great introduction to a post apocalyptic world, a story you appreciate even more when you’re rereading it after reading the follow ups and realise how many Easter Eggs Lily Mayne already hid for us.

I am an huge fan of Lily Mayne. The almost post-apocalyptic Earth she describes in her books, the humans and monsters, who now live here, are so realistically detailed and the circumstances they all suffer are frighteningly imaginable.
This is the first book in the series and is dedicated to the admittedly rather lousy soldier Danny, who instead of killing the dreaded soul eater, gradually falls for his inhuman charms. (And other inhuman...parts)
I was skeptical as to how well a human could do the voice of Wyn, described as very distorted, but Michael Lesley has met that challenge seemingly effortlessly. All of the characters are uniquely and incredibly appropriately portrayed.

Es war sehr interessant, die Geschichte an sich und die Charaktere. Alle Bücher sind miteinander verbunden. hab innerhalb von paar Tagen alle durchgehört😅
Und der Sprecher hat es sehr gut gemacht.

I didn't come across the voice talent before, but I think he did a perfect job. The characters are great, and the story addresses some social issues (prejudice, etc.) that give it more depth than one might expect. Overall, I really enjoyed the audiobook. It's an exciting journey in which different worlds collide, with plenty of spice, as the two main characters are almost constantly horny ;).

I only know the audio book. that be said, I'm now intrigued to check out the whole series.

story is interesting enough, but not a lot of world building in the first book. I would have had a thousand more questions for wyn if I were Danny 😅

steamy scenes are plenty and not far apart for all the 🌶 readers.

Also a lot of very sweet and emotional parts.

For all of the monster lovers, no there is no breeding/egg fertility/ pregnant trope in this part except for symbiotic illness in infected humans.

Ok so to be fair, I was really bothered by the voice in the beginning. The breathing was pretty annoying at first and the aloof way the MC sounded took getting used to BUT

...and that's a big but. It was worth it. The voice is weird at first but it DOES fit the character the more we get to know him. Also the voice of the soul eater is just perfection.

The story itself is everything one could hope for, and it is a joy to see their love bloom despite their differences.

Best 5 star read I've had in a while!
Definitely going to read the next installment in the series.

I like erotic but, without a good history, things gets boring. I like the setting thoug, although dystopia it's beeing butter and bread for years now.
