This carefully curated anthology brings together the most iconic romantic tales of all time—each filled with complex characters, sweeping emotions, and timeless narratives that will captivate your heart. From the fiery romance of Wuthering Heights to the quiet yearning of A Room with a View, these stories are a perfect blend of forbidden love, tragic endings, and tender moments of connection.

A Classic Pair: Tess of the D'Urbevilles & Lady Chatterley's Lover brings together two iconic British writers from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Thomas Hardy and D. H. Lawrence. Famed for their brazen explorations of love and sexuality in their works, which challenged contemporary social norms, both authors were fiercely critical of society's rigid conventions. In this classic pair, delve into worlds of unmet desire, unexpected connections and ironically tragic fates in writing that resonates still today.

In an Audible Exclusive performance, Holliday Grainger lends her voice to a new unabridged recording of Lady Chatterley's Lover, a novel that was banned until 1960 and is now considered to be one of the most renowned love stories of all time. This production features an exclusive introduction written and narrated by Fern Riddell, a cultural historian who specialises in sex in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The story of Lady Chatterley and her love for her husband's gamekeeper outraged the sensibilities of Edwardian England. Lawrence had already been dismissed as a purveyor of the obscene for the attitudes to sex that he had shown in The Rainbow, which had been fiercely suppressed on its publication in 1915. Chatterley, written in several versions around 1928 in Italy in the final part of Lawrence's life, was a deliberate choice on the author's part to address sex head on.

Lady Constance Chatterley is stuck in a loveless marriage until she crosses paths with Oliver Mellors, the estate’s gamekeeper. Embarking on a passionate affair with Mellors awakens desires in Lady Chatterley that she had never been able to explore within the confines of straight-laced society. As her journey of sexual self-discovery deepens, Lady Chatterley must navigate the clash of mind and body, industrialization and nature, and firmly established class distinctions.

At the end of World War 1, D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda ("the queen bee"), exiled themselves from England and set up home in Sicily. On the spur of the moment, Lawrence proposed a short trip to Sardinia. Setting off before dawn, they embarked on a whirlwind tour, by train to Palermo, ferry to Cagliari, and by train and bus to Terranova, returning to Rome by ferry. Back in Sicily, Lawrence wrote Sea and Sardinia, one of the great travel journals of the 20th century, in six weeks and entirely from memory.

The London Classics Collection: Stories of the City allows you to step into the heart of London with a curated selection of iconic literary works that explore the soul of one of the world's most fascinating cities. From the smoky alleys of Victorian London to the political upheavals of the 20th century, this collection brings together stories that capture the city's rich history, diverse characters, and unflinching reflections on society.

When Constance Reid's new husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, returns from war paralyzed and in a wheelchair, she sees her future wither. As their marriage grows loveless, she mourns the desires fated to go unfulfilled. But a stirring fascination with Oliver Mellors, the estate's coarse, taciturn gamekeeper, blooms into feelings she feared had died. Soon the lovers find themselves entangled in scandal, and their taboo affair becomes as pernicious as it is passionate.

First published in 1915 and often ranked as one of the best novels of the twentieth century, The Rainbow is a passionate tale of desire, struggle and the search for personal freedom. As bold as it is lyrical, The Rainbow traces three generations of the Brangwen family as they navigate love, desire, identity and social change in rural Nottinghamshire. Centred on the spirited Ursula Brangwen, the narrative explores her struggle for independence and self-fulfilment in a world driven by traditional social conventions.

Constance Chatterley feels trapped in her sexless marriage to the invalid Sir Clifford. Unable to fulfil his wife emotionally or physically, Clifford encourages her to have a liaison with a man of their own class. But Connie is attracted instead to her husband's gamekeeper and embarks on a passionate affair that brings new life to her stifled existence. Can she find a true equality with Mellors, despite the vast gulf between their positions in society?

Loss in any form seems to burden us with more weight than anything that can possibly be gained or learnt from. The loss of a person, a loved one, is often overwhelming. Lives so interwoven that the severing or loss of one life leaves the other weakened, unable to function for some time. Recovery comes in a myriad of forms but is usually debilitating, slow and, in the end, we are not as whole as we once were.It is a subject that authors return to again and again.

Crowned ‘the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation’ by EM Forster, DH Lawrence has an undisputed place in England's canon of great authors. In this wide-ranging collection, dramatisations and readings of some of his major works are brought together, exploring themes such as romantic love and sexual desire, individual freedom, class division, war, the beauty of nature and the ugliness of industrialisation.

Das Meisterwerk des kühnen englischen Romanciers ist einer urtypischen Situation gewidmet: der Liebe zwischen Mutter und Sohn...

Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's third published novel, was written by the author at the height of his literary powers. The story of class differences (the relationship between a middle-class woman and a miner) in the tough world of coal mining brought a refreshing realism to literature. It remains a challenging text and is studied widely. It is particularly effective on audiobook in the hands of Nottinghamshire reader Paul Slack.

Gerald Crich, son of a wealthy colliery owner, captures the heart of Gudrun, while Ursula becomes enamored with Rupert Birkin, a school inspector - their complex relationship likely modelled on that between Lawrence, his wife Frieda, and John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Things are far from harmonious, and the discord and conflict leads to many heated and elaborate philosophical discussions about modern society and the nature of love, while tragedy looms large.
