At the end of World War 1, D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda ("the queen bee"), exiled themselves from England and set up home in Sicily. On the spur of the moment, Lawrence proposed a short trip to Sardinia. Setting off before dawn, they embarked on a whirlwind tour, by train to Palermo, ferry to Cagliari, and by train and bus to Terranova, returning to Rome by ferry. Back in Sicily, Lawrence wrote Sea and Sardinia, one of the great travel journals of the 20th century, in six weeks and entirely from memory. Alternately enthusiastic and grumpy, but always effusive, Lawrence’s journal sparkles with observations of the day-to-day detail of travel and characters encountered on the way.

It's hardly getting better when we look at the writing style: ridiculously full of completely unnecessary repetition, obviously imitating other writers who, in contrast to Lawrence, indeed had the talent to make sensible use of this stilistic feature. He's unbearably full of himself - even in his style. This is genuinely bad writing, and I can now stop wondering why I never finished "Sons and lovers" when I was a youth.
And as if all that weren't enough already, the speaker is also utterly terrible. His performance reminds me of a drunkard singing, going up and down in waves with his voice, plus using a variety of annoying artificial mannerisms like pronouncing the word "look" very much like "loot" - and, believe me, "look" is one of Mr Lawrence's favourite verbs.
This was genuinely one of the worst audiobook experiences I ever had. I'm only giving it a second star on the overall rating because the audio file is of the correct book, comes in a decent quality and has the chapters structured well.
