Among the numerous sciences pursued by the well-disciplined army of earnest students of the present century, none has had less honors or more scoffing than the oldest of them—the science of sciences, the venerable mother-parent of all our modern pigmies. Anxious in their petty vanity to throw the veil of oblivion over their undoubted origin, the self-styled positive scientists, ever on the alert, present to the courageous scholar who tries to deviate from the beaten highway traced out for him by his dogmatic predecessors, a formidable range of serious obstacles.

The Art of Gregorian Music has been selected as a suitable beginning because it deals on broad lines with the principles underlying the restoration of the liturgical chant of the Catholic Church. The paper was originally read before the Catholic University of Paris in 1896 and thus antedated, by nearly a decade, the official action of the Holy See.

The Swami Vivekananda was sent by his friends and co-religionists to present their belief at the Congress of Religions that was held in connection with the World’s Fair in Chicago. This he did in a way to win general interest and admiration.

The history of Taoist philosophy may be conveniently divided into three stages: the primitive stage, the stage of development, and the stage of degeneration. The first of these stages is only known to us through the medium of a single semi-historical figure, the philosopher Lao Tzu, whose birth is traditionally assigned to the year 604 BC.

I have spent a goodly part of my life in study and research. During the last 30 years, I have read every single piece of literature on the subject of spiritualism that I could. I have accumulated one of the largest libraries in the world on psychic phenomena, spiritualism, magic, witchcraft, demonology, evil spirits, etc - some of the material going back as far as 1489. And I doubt if any one in the world has so complete a library on modern spiritualism, but nothing I ever read concerning the so-called spiritualistic phenomena has impressed me as being genuine.

Living in close contact with Hinduism, Buddhism, Muhammadanism, and Christianity, I have studied their sacred books and the writings of their leading thinkers; while, from personal conversation with many of their learned followers, I have been able to extract much information regarding their faiths. The results of my thinking on these four great religions I have set down in this book.

Before manifestation, what existed? Zat, the truly existing, the only being. In what form? In no form. As what? As nothing. The only definition that words can give is as the absolute. In the Sufi terms this existence is termed Ahadiat, a consciousness arose out of the absolute, the consciousness of existence.

I have strung these things together on a slight enough thread, but as the things themselves are slight, it is possible that the thread (and the metaphor) may manage to hang together. These notes range over very variegated topics, and in many cases, were made at very different times.

The investigator who seeks to develop exact and careful conception of realities in a realm as temperamental as the occult faces from the beginning unsuspected difficulties. Every defining term as well as every accepted teaching and doctrine is variously interpreted by the different groups of students. Here is a field in which the most sincere teachers are swept into narrow prejudice by the sheer fire of their enthusiasm and so seem universally to emphasize their differences one from the other when they could as well build upon a meeting ground of common understanding.

A supreme power and wisdom govern the universe. The supreme mind is measureless and pervades endless space. The supreme wisdom, power, and intelligence are in everything that exists from the atom to the planet. The supreme power and wisdom are more than in everything. The supreme mind is everything. The supreme mind is every atom of the mountain, the sea, the tree, the bird, the animal, the man, the woman. The supreme wisdom cannot be understood by man or by beings superior to man.

In the present age both Church and Science, the blindly-believing and the all-denying, are arrayed against the Secret Sciences, though Church and Science believed in and practised them - especially the Kabalah - at a not very distant period of history. One says now: “It is of the devil”! the other that the devil is a creation of the Church, and a disgraceful superstition ”in short that there is neither devil nor occult sciences. The first one forgets that it has publicly proclaimed, hardly 400 years ago, the Jewish Kabalah as the greatest witness to the truths of Christianity!

When we turn our attention to the subject of elemental Intelligences or Nature-Spirits, we are confronted by this immediate difficulty, that we are led at the very beginning beyond and behind the world which we know through the channels of the senses. Sense perception does not help us at all in our study of that mysterious realm of life which constitutes the invisible background of physical manifestation. Madame Blavatsky warned us long ago that to describe Nature-Spirits or Elementals as having definite and corporeal form was likely to lead into great error.

Life is wonderfully simple. One efficient energy or spirit permeates all that exists. A few universal laws characterise this energy in all phases of its infinitely varied manifestation. To feel this spirit as a living reality within, to understand these simple laws and adapt life to wise obedience to them - this it is to possess the greatest peace, happiness, and power of doing good. The entire secret could be told in a few words...

This little book appeals, perhaps, to the Eastern rather than to the Western type of mind, but so many souls trained in the East are now being reincarnated in the West that it may find friendly [listeners] away from the land of its birth. Addressed to a purely Hindu audience, the lectures contain many common Samskrit words, familiar to every Hindu, that may sound strange in the ears of [listeners] of other faiths

O you, my gentle listener, I wish to say a foreword of warning before you peruse the contents of this book. I am not a poet, nor a scholar, therefore you shall find neither poems nor prose. Just dreams - daydreams - a bit of romance, a bit of sentimentalism, a bit of philosophy, not studied, but acquired by constant observation of that greatest of masters: nature!

In this little sketch of the Druid work and thought. A Mr. Freeman unlocks a door which opens on long vistas of suggestive beauty, down which we would fain wander to gather the flowers of wisdom and tradition of which we catch a glimpse. That the Druids held in trust secrets of science and mystic lore we know. Persecution by the ignorant and the superstitious slew, and drove into hiding the wise and the understanding, and robbed the lands of the kelts of music and poesy, of art and grace, save that which was interwoven in the soul of the people and made them what they were.

A fascinating story of how the teachings of Confucius came to the western world, told to a 17th century Englishman by an ancient ghost.

Prentice Mulford was a visionary, inspiring new thought leaders of 100 years ago and the Law of Attraction leaders of today. This selection from The Gift of the Spirit gets right to the heart of the Law of Attraction mind-set and lifestyle.

As with all the books in this series, the goal is to find selections which most clearly and succinctly, even though they are 100 years old, describe and prescribe the "life" you need to live to experience the law of attraction. It's different than we hear today. And it makes a lot of sense.

This new old study of the Logos manifest in the macrocosm is awakening man to a principle of knowledge and a revelation of Providence. It is a priceless treasure, for in its study life becomes a beautiful stream of interpretation and an enjoyment of light. The Logos is and interprets cosmic force; it is life, sensation; it is man’s reason; it is his prescience, intuition and inspiration. The Logos is the archetype, original pattern of all created things. It overshadows all minds. It creates, advances, and evolves man.
