• Ep 122: What Got You Here May Be Keeping You Here
    Oct 8 2026

Is what got you here still capable of taking you where you're trying to go? Sometimes the thing standing between you and your next chapter isn't something you don't know. It's something you already know.

In this episode of The Shattered Mindset Podcast, Melvin Larry takes on a hard kind of growth: questioning the things that worked. Failure gets our attention. Success gives us evidence we were right, and that makes it harder to see when a lesson has finished its job.

Melvin talks about the difference between an experience and the meaning we attach to it. He shares how growing up shorter than everyone shaped what he believed about himself. He also explains why, now that his sons are all taller than him, the same fact means something completely different. He talks about becoming a beginner again in podcasting after years as a church audio and video technician, and why being vulnerable on the show still challenges his private, introverted nature. He revisits advice a leader gave him more than 20 years ago and explains how he applies it differently today. He also covers the person many of us find hardest to forgive: ourselves.

Along the way, he shows how limiting beliefs often don't sound limiting. They sound like experience. "I've tried that before." "That's just who I am." "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Your past deserves a voice. It just doesn't get the final say.

    In this episode:

    • Why it's harder to question something that worked than something that failed
    • The difference between an experience and the interpretation you attached to it
    • How a lesson can outlive the situation that created it
    • Why limiting beliefs often sound like experience instead of fear
    • Confusing identity with repetition, and why "that's just who I am" deserves a question
    • Using the dots and lines to find where a belief came from
    • Principle vs. method: the principle stays, the application evolves
    • How old beliefs stop you from taking the action that would produce new evidence
    • Why success is "the progressive realization of a worthy ideal"
    • How to honor the person you used to be without letting them make every decision

  • Ep 121: Your Story Isn't About You
    Oct 1 2026

It's your story. But it's not about you. The stories you keep telling don't just describe your life. They shape it.

In this episode of The Shattered Mindset Podcast, Melvin Larry revisits a presentation he gave years before this podcast existed. It was called The Power of Stories, and inside it he finds the same idea this show was later built on: life's turning points and defining moments.

Melvin walks through the three elements found in most meaningful stories: a challenge, a transition, and a defining moment. He shows why those three don't always happen close together. He retells the car accident he survived at 16 and explains how its meaning unfolded over 30 years. Part of that came from finally understanding, as a father himself, why his own father reacted the way he did that night.

He also covers the side of storytelling most people miss. The stories we repeat about ourselves can turn into limiting beliefs and rehearsed identities. Through stories of missed opportunities, prejudging people, a year of five family losses, and a manager who said he'd never advance, Melvin shows how to discover, develop, and deliver your story so it serves someone besides you.

    In this episode:

    • The three elements of a meaningful story: challenge, transition, and defining moment
    • Why the meaning of an experience can take decades to show itself
    • How the S.I.F.T. Process™ explains why two people tell the same event so differently
    • How repeated stories become limiting beliefs and rehearsed identities
    • Missed opportunities, assumptions, and the influence you don't realize you have
    • Why perseverance sometimes just means putting one foot in front of the other
    • How to discover, develop, and deliver your own story with purpose
    • Why legacy isn't just what you leave to people, but what you leave in them

  • Ep 120: You've Been Reading the Wrong Map
    Sep 24 2026

Africa is fourteen times bigger than Greenland. What else have you been wrong about?

For four hundred and fifty years, the world looked at a map that quietly lied about the size of an entire continent — and almost nobody stopped to check it. In this episode, Melvin Larry breaks down why that happened, and why the same thing has been happening inside you. The belief you've been carrying about who you are, what you're capable of, and what's still possible for you — where did that map actually get drawn? A parent, a teacher, a failure, a season that's long over? This episode walks through what that wrong map has already cost you, a real story about a cassette tape Melvin almost threw away that turned into millions in business, and a practical way to actually redraw the map for yourself, starting today.

  • Ep 119: Nancy Dabney: Ministry, Mental Health & God's Seasons
    Sep 17 2026

She spent years running from mental health conversations — until the same program that helped her understand her sister also taught her how to finally grieve her.

What happens when you stop chasing a career and start following assignments instead? In this episode, I sit down with Nancy Dabney — Connections Ministry Director at LinkedUp Church, ordained minister, former lighthouse keeper, and someone who's mentored me personally through my own podcasting journey. We talk about the moment she rededicated her life in 1991 and hasn't taken a "job" since, what it actually looked like to run America's first lighthouse, and the wild story of obedience that led her from cleaning a church bathroom to producing a TV ministry. We also go somewhere deeper — her years of resistance to working in mental health, the sister she lost, and the psychosis education program that finally let her see her sister as a person instead of a diagnosis. Nancy doesn't hand out easy answers here. She talks about seasons, about emotions not defining you, and about why every dot in your life — even the confusing ones — eventually connects to a through-line. If you've ever felt like your path doesn't add up, this conversation is for you.

  • Ep 118: When Did You Stop Expecting More from Yourself?
    Sep 10 2026

You didn't wake up one day and decide to want less from yourself. It happened slowly enough that you never even noticed the bar dropping.

Somewhere along the way, without ever making a decision about it, you stopped expecting as much from yourself. Not in one dramatic moment — through a slow, quiet erosion caused by comfort, success, disappointment, or age. In this episode of The Shattered Mindset Podcast, Melvin Larry breaks down the four quiet ways your personal standards get lowered without your permission, and why each one feels completely reasonable in the moment. From a career decision Melvin turned down decades ago to patterns he's watched play out for years in leadership and business, this episode challenges you to name exactly where you've quietly settled — and what it would cost you to raise the bar again, starting this week. If you're a leader, entrepreneur, or anyone who's ever felt the edge come off your own ambition, this conversation is for you.

  • Ep 117: Che Willis - From $23,500 to Financial Freedom
    Sep 3 2026

He bought his first rental for $23,500 right before the 2008 crash froze lending. Today he owns five properties free and clear, and it started with his dad showing him a house full of strangers paying rent.

Che Willis, host of the Wealth is a Journey podcast, joins The Shattered Mindset to unpack the real story behind his financial journey: growing up in a crowded three-bedroom house, discovering real estate at nine years old on a trip through Philadelphia with his father, buying his first rental in 2007 just before the market crashed, and paying off his house three weeks after starting Financial Peace University. We get into the forgotten stock options that helped pay off his mortgage, why he refuses to convince anyone to change their financial habits, how he's teaching his nine-year-old son and his cousins to invest through a monthly family Zoom call, and why he's still not ready to leave his corporate job even though he set a goal to retire at 45.

  • Ep 116: The Moment Before Confidence | Clarity, Resistance & The Action-Clarity-Confidence Loop
    Aug 27 2026

He watched the enemy get closer and said one word: "Hold!" Then, at the exact right moment, he said: "Now!" That gap between "Hold" and "Now" is where real clarity lives.

A leader stands still while his own troops beg to move. He's not calm because he's fearless — he's calm because he's been here before. That gap between "hold" and "now" is what this episode is really about.

Melvin Larry breaks down the difference between certainty and clarity, why clarity isn't a feeling but a place you learn to stand in, and how it gets built through deliberate action long before resistance ever shows up. He walks through the three kinds of confidence clarity gives you — smaller and sooner, big and now, or the hardest one: the confidence to hold. He also gets honest about his own version of imposter syndrome, unpacks the three clarity questions everyone is quietly carrying (about their past, their present, and what's ahead), and names four ways resistance shows up to test clarity after you've already found it.

  • Ep 115: Voice Actor Lamarr Gulley: Cancer, Faith & Winning an Audie Award
    Aug 20 2026

He beat cancer, kept his voice, and won the Audie Award months later.

Lamarr Gulley on what it costs to bet on your gift when the world tells you to be practical.

    Description:
Voice Actor, Lamarr Gulley spent over two decades building a stable career as a database administrator...and quietly building a second career in the margins of it. In this episode, Lamarr sits down with Melvin to unpack the full arc: the Akron childhood where teachers first noticed his voice, the audition at 35 that finally lit the fire, the decade-long journey to walking away from corporate life, a cancer diagnosis that doctors feared would take his voice entirely, and the night he won the Audie Award, audio's highest honor, on his wedding anniversary. This is a conversation about identity, discipline, and faith carrying a person through a career that never hands out guarantees. Lamarr and Melvin also go deep on what it means to have a church family that shows up for you in the hardest seasons, and why it's never too late to start.

    • His first-ever audition in 1998 — and the funding that got pulled overnight
