  • Why Saying 'I'm Not Your Guy' Wins You the Client | No Strings Attached #42 | Michael Katz
    Sep 8 2026

Learn why setting boundaries and being honest about who you aren’t for is the ultimate strategy to win the right clients.

In this episode of No Strings Attached, Roger Magalhaes talks with marketing expert Michael Katz about how small business owners can ditch the corporate persona and build a brand based on radical honesty, likability, and trust.

We explore why pretending to be a big corporation like Verizon or Starbucks actually hurts your growth and how sharing your personal stories—including the mistakes and pivots—creates a connection that budget-heavy marketing simply can't buy.

If you want to move from being a commodity to being a trusted advisor, this conversation provides the blueprint for high-trust, word-of-mouth business growth.

    • The subjective nature of likability and why it matters more than your degrees or years in business.

    • How writing a newsletter the way you talk can bridge the gap with potential clients even before the first meeting.

    • The psychological power of saying "I'm not your guy" to filter for high-quality clients and increase your closing rate.

    • Why authenticity is the only way for solopreneurs and small installers to compete against large corporate budgets.

  • #41 - International Installs: The Part Nobody Sees | No Strings Attached Podcast
    Aug 31 2026

Getting flown to Turks and Caicos to hang shades sounds like a dream gig. Post the beach photo, cash the check, done. Right?

    Not quite.

In this one, Roger pulls back the curtain on what international installs actually look like from the installer's chair — the long hours, the missing tools, the immigration line, and the stuff that goes sideways when there's no Home Depot around the corner to bail you out.

It starts with pride. Getting picked for an out-of-country job is somebody saying I trust you, I want you on this one. That recognition is real, and it feels good. But once you land, the honeymoon's over — you're not on vacation, you're on the clock, and they're going to squeeze every hour they paid for.

Roger walks through the hard-earned lessons: why your favorite tools might not make the trip, why you'll be borrowing a chop saw with the wrong blade, why he paid $150 just to check an overweight toolbox, and why your drill batteries ride in your carry-on.

He gets into the pay reality (nobody's cutting you a check for 24/7), the grocery-run-for-lunch survival plan, and the one thing that trips people up more than anything else — working permits. Go in with a tape measure, you're a tourist. Come back with a truckload of tools, and immigration wants to see paperwork you should've started six weeks ago.

If you've ever chased the "glamorous" island job — or you're about to — this is the honest brief you wish someone handed you first.

    In this episode:

    • Why international jobs are a trust signal (and a little bit of ego)
    • The "this isn't a vacation" reality check
    • Packing smart when there's no hardware store nearby
    • Improvising on-site: wrong blades, missing screws, borrowed tools
    • The real cost of shipping tools (and where your batteries go)
    • Getting paid fairly when you can't bill every hour
    • Feeding yourself when the island runs on limited resources
    • The permit mistake that gets people stopped at the border
    • Building the mindset to solve problems on the fly

  • #40 - My Mom, the Cleaners, and the Trap Every Business Owner Falls Into
    Aug 27 2026

Roger spent the first 18 years of Shades in Place doing everything himself. And he did it well — nobody could match his standard. That felt like a strength. It wasn't. It was a lid.

This episode starts with his mom. She kept an immaculate house for decades — floors so shiny you could comb your hair in the reflection. Then she got sick, they hired cleaners, and suddenly nobody was good enough. Every cleaner did an "ok job." Sound familiar?

Then there are Roger's friends who cook like magicians — and can never enjoy a restaurant, because no meal ever measures up to their own standard.

Two different stories, same trap. And it's the exact trap that keeps business owners stuck: when the only person qualified to judge the work is you, you can never step away. No vacation. No sick days. No growth. You become a slave to your own company.

Here's the shift that changed everything for Roger: most of your customers don't have the expertise to see the gap you're killing yourself over. They just want the job done well. So you train someone to be 80–90% of you on the everyday work — and save your own hands for the jobs that truly need Roger.

The payoff? Seven installers. An office manager who runs circles around him on the stuff she's great at. Emails answered same-day instead of three days late. And the moment that says it all — customers who now call and ask, "Can you send one of your guys?"

That's when you know you've built a company instead of a job.

If you've ever felt like your business would fall apart the second you stepped away, this one's for you.

  • #38 - "We're Rich Now" — The One Sentence From My Mom That Changed How I Live
    Aug 11 2026

I flew to Brazil to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday, and this episode is the story I came home with.

Years ago, standing in her kitchen while she washed dishes, I told her half-joking: "Mom, we're rich now — you don't have to worry anymore."

She shut off the faucet, turned to me, and said something I've never been able to unhear: "We might have some money now, but I don't have the health to enjoy it anymore."

That one line rearranged how I think about work, money, and time.

In this personal episode, I share my mom's journey — from a rough childhood and three years of schooling, to riding 3,000 miles in a truck to São Paulo chasing a better life, to the frugal, risk-averse, fiercely loving woman who gave up her own enjoyment so my sister and I could have ours.

I also get into how the book Die With Zero (which I've now read three times) landed on top of that kitchen conversation and pushed me to actually live the life I'm building — take the trip, skip the occasional workday, show up for the graduations and the weekend games, because those days don't come back.

If you're heads-down grinding and saving every dollar for a "someday" that may never arrive — this one's for you.

    • Why Trading Secrets became No Strings Attached — and why the struggles of small business owners are basically a universal language
    • My mom's story: broken home, third-grade education, street-smart brilliance, and a lifetime of labor-intensive work
    • The kitchen conversation that dropped a bomb on my head
    • What Die With Zero taught me about spending your time (and money) while you can still enjoy it
    • The hard truth about tomorrow being a promise, not a guarantee

The blog post that inspired this episode

I wrote about my mom's 80th birthday before I recorded this. If the episode hits home, the written version goes even deeper:

  • #37 - He Ghosted Every Invoice — Until I Sent This One Text
    Aug 2 2026

Four emails. A text. A phone call he hung up on. The job was done, the product was installed, and my invoice was sitting there getting ignored (again)!

Then I sent one message and had a response in about two minutes.

In this episode I walk through a payment situation that went sideways last month with a dealer I'd already done four installs for. Same pattern every time: he's on top of everything until the bill shows up, then he vanishes. This time I ran out of patience.

But here's the part I didn't expect when I sat down to record — about halfway through telling the story, I had to admit I owned a piece of this.

I never told him our terms. I assumed he remembered from the last four jobs. He assumed net 30. Nobody said it out loud, and that's how a simple invoice turns into a fight.

I also get into how I structure payments now — why I take 75% up front and deliberately leave 25% on the table, even though Lowe's, Amazon, and every online retailer collects 100% before you ever see the product. There's a reason for that 25%, and it's not just goodwill.

If you've ever chased money for work you already delivered, this one's for you.
