It explores themes of motherhood and wifehood and the role of unpaid careworker women both are societally conditioned to take on and which many also take on as a form of martyrdom - as our main character does.
Explicitly she is resentful of these burdens and being underappreciated for them but I felt that she does not communicate this to her family or draws new boundaries to reduce these pressures on her to free herself actively from these roles. She seems to feel that they should one day simply realise this and change it without having to be asked. During the story she however works on not entering new relationships with this same dynamic and much of the personal conflict in the storylines revolves around these themes.
I would have loved for her to not be so much defined by these relational roles to children and men and for her to have more and diverse interests for herself even if she can’t follow them out of obligation but I guess her not having that in her life and resenting it is some of the point of these themes so well done to the author on that. It made me mad at and on behalf of our heroine.
It’s a fun sequel to hart & mercy who we get to see briefly, but also a fun standalone. :)
