Born in Dickens, Los Angeles, the narrator of The Sellout spent his childhood as the subject in his father's racially charged psychological studies. He is told that his father's memoir will solve their financial woes. But when his father is killed, he discovers there never was a memoir.

Fuelled by despair, he sets out to right this wrong with the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.

Der Held des Romans glaubt nicht an das "post-racial" Amerika der frühen Obama-Jahre. Er will in seiner Umgebung in LA das offen rassistische Amerika der 50er wiederherstellen, um Zusammengehörigkeit und Selbstachtung der Schwarzen zu stärken. Und es scheint zu funktionieren in diesem Schelmenroman.
Die Protagonisten des Buches sind fast ausschließlich Schwarze: Intelligenzya, (scheinbar) Arrivierte, Überlebenskünstler, offen Verrückte.... und der Held, der unbeirrt sein Ziel verfolgt. Erzählt ist die Geschichte noch absurder und komischer, was auch die Hörbuch-Version so besonders macht.
Jedenfalls ist das hier ganz große Literatur- und ganz wunderbare Unterhaltung.

I really liked the book.
Interessingly it is received very differently by Americans/Europeans, people of color/white people (we discussed it in a book club and I urged some of my friends to read it).

Satire at it´s best.

I was completely lost. It is some bizarre standup act rather than a story. Did not like the reader either. One probably should be more acquainted with the US racial politics to get it.
