When losing everything leads to finding what matters most.

When catastrophe strikes the Darcy family, Fitzwilliam Darcy finds himself stripped of both his ancestral home and guardianship of his young sister. The magnificent Pemberley estate—his birthright and legacy—has been wrenched from his control through deceit and legal manipulation, leaving the once-proud master destitute and angry.

Seeking refuge in Hertfordshire as a guest of his loyal friend Charles Bingley, Darcy's path crosses with the brilliant and resourceful Elizabeth Bennet. Unlike the privileged circles he once moved in, Elizabeth understands intimately how to navigate life with nothing but wit and determination.

Together, these unlikely allies forge a powerful bond. Armed with their sharp minds and unwavering resolve, they devise an audacious plan to reclaim what was stolen. As they battle against seemingly insurmountable odds, they discover that the ultimate fortune may not lie in Pemberley's grand halls, but in the meeting of two kindred spirits who refuse to accept defeat.

In this captivating Regency variation of Jane Austen's beloved Pride & Prejudice, Darcy's greatest loss becomes the catalyst for his greatest love.

When Darcy arrives in Hertfordshire to visit his friend Bingley he has lost everything: He is no longer the master of Pemberley, he has lost his fortune and the guardianship of his sister due to deceit of the worst kind. But unexpectedly there is light in the darkness: he encounters the enchanting Elizabeth Bennet at the Meryton Assembly. Soon the two discover that the other may have valuable advice and they form a friendship that ultimately leads to love. Together they try to fight for Darcy’s legacy. Will they be able to reclaim what was stolen from Darcy? Will they restore his good name and his fortune? Or is what values most something different than wealth and possession?

The book was very well written by the author J Dawn King. I had not expected anything else from her, her books are always a must buy because I enjoy them all so very much. The book was very thrilling because all the time there is the threat of Darcy’s lost position and wealth that is hanging in the air and the one who deceived him seems always a step ahead. Fortunately Darcy encounters Elizabeth very early in the book and they are together in this hardship and fight together against it. There are not many misunderstandings or obstacles between ODC in this book, therefore the path for their relationship is cleared very soon, they have to fight external obstacles together. I like it very much when it is ODC against a villain, therefore the excitement of the book was easily bearable for me because ODC was together to face it.

I love to see Darcy without responsibility and wealth, only the real man without the armour of wealth and pride he normally builds around himself. In short, the man we normally only get to see after Elizabeth refused him and he needs to think about his attitude. I found this very appealing. Seeing the “real” Darcy is also the reason that there are not so many misunderstandings between Elizabeth and Darcy at the beginning, and he is also already “taken from his high horse “ because he has lost nearly everything and is dependent on the help of his friends and relatives.

Due to a statement of Mary's, Elizabeth early in the book realizes that she needs to provide for her future on her own as best as she can. I love how she now acts with purpose and that this experience gives her the wisdom and inside to help Darcy think through his problems. Due to her changed attitude she is also more forgiving and less inclined to hang on first opinions and prejudices. It's therefore also due to her changed view that there are not many obstacles between ODC and they can form a loving relationship.

Bingley is normally very reliant on his friend Darcy. In this variation he shows himself as a valuable friend and stands by Darcy's side when others start to look down on him. I love the wisdom he develops during the book and that he finally takes consequences regarding his sisters. Well done Mr Bingley!

At the beginning of the book I was really annoyed by Georgiana. It was really generous of Darcy to forgive her so readily, it took me considerably more time to make peace with her, her actions and her behaviour. But in the end she fortunately discovers who really loves and values her and who does not.

You may imagine when Darcy loses everything Wickham certainly is not far away. But rest assured he is not the only villain. It takes Darcy long to identify those who have deceived him but in the end, with the help of his friends, he is able to claim justice. But the road to justice was long and rocky and with many obstacles. But in the end villains get what they deserve.

The book was narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Stevie Zimmerman, As always her performance was of the highest quality and the story a delight to listen to. I love stories with her as a narrator very much. She is able to make a really good story even better, in this case the search for the deceivers and the attempts to regain Pemberley were even more nerve-wracking than only reading it. I like that Stevie Zimmerman gives each character their specific voice and that I’m therefore able to tell at every point of the story who is speaking with whom.

If you like to know how Darcy comports himself when he has lost everything and how this affects his relationship with Elizabeth you should listen to this excellent audiobook.

I highly recommend it.
