Professor Drout addresses the foundation of language and its connection to specific portions of the brain. The components of language are explained in easy-to-understand terms and the progression of the language from Germanic to Old, Middle, and Modern English is fully illustrated - including such revolutionary language upheavals as those brought about by the Norman Conquest and the Great Vowel Shift.

One of the most interesting aspects of the English language lies in its variants, such as the "soda" vs. "pop" debate and the place of African-American English in modern culture. These and other dialectual curiosities are looked at in detail and placed in the context of today's world. Finally, Professor Drout examines the future, not only of the English language, but of all the world's languages.

Usually, I find grammar, phonetics or the history of language to be boring and tedious subjects. But obviously it all depends on the teacher and Prof. Drout does a really outstanding job at explaining the structure, the logic and the history of the English language in simplest and most interesting terms, including lots of humor and memorable anecdotes.

The title of this audiobook is a little misleading since it really is as much an introduction into English linguistics as it is into the History of the English language, but that just made the book even more useful to me.

This lecture is not only written beautifully, but I also found it very easy to stay focused on Drout’s voice. Drout’s enthusiasm is noticeable in every sentence. I don’t think that any professional reader/actor could have improved on Drout’s performance. I can only recommend this audiobook, especially to university students of English.

Great Introduction into Language and History
