Fierce warriors and skilled craftsmen, the Celts were famous throughout the Ancient Mediterranean World. They were the archetypal barbarians from the north and were feared by both Greeks and Romans. For 2,500 years, they have continued to fascinate those who have come into contact with them, yet their origins have remained a mystery and even today are the subject of heated debate among historians and archaeologists.

Barry Cunliffe's classic study of the ancient Celtic world was first published in 1997. Since then, huge advances have taken place in our knowledge: new finds, new ways of using DNA records to understand Celtic origins, new ideas about the proto-urban nature of early chieftains' strongholds. All these developments are part of this fully updated and completely redesigned edition.

Cunliffe explores the archaeological reality of these bold warriors and skilled craftsmen of barbarian Europe who inspired fear in both the Greeks and the Romans. From the picture that emerges, we are crucially able to distinguish between the original Celts and those tribes which were "Celtized", giving us an invaluable insight into the true identity of this ancient people.

The books covers the complete history of the celtic peoples, from the origins of their material culture in Central Europe, to the migration to France, Fberia, the British Isles, South Poland and West Ukraine, the Balkans North Itlay, and even as far as Central Turkey and Egypt, as well as their battles with the ancient Greeks and Romans and their eventual conquest and cultural assimilation by the latter. It is well worth a read/listen.

A complete history of the Celts.

If one is used to rich storytellings like e.g. "Children of Ash and Elm" or "The Anglo-Saxons", this audiobook is rather bleak and very hard to follow. The author's way of storytelling largely consists of an enumerative style, lining reference after reference, further complicated by the hard accent of the speaker. Long (very. very long) sentences where unrecognizable French or German names of historians/places/people are lined up are extremely boring honestly.
The author seems to try to tackle the question if "Celtic" mainly means "of Celtic language" through the whole book, repeating the idea again and again without answering it. A brief part on Mediterranian belly beakers is intersting, but that's the only intriguing half-chapter, unfortunately. If you are looking for a vivid depiction of how the Celtics lived and what they did, this is rather not part of the book. History can be so interesting, but this book is not.
