The Hunger of the Gods swept me away with its gritty Norse-inspired world and relentless pacing. John Gwynne’s ability to weave complex characters, divine forces, and brutal battles into a cohesive story is simply outstanding. I found the plot deeply compelling and the worldbuilding rich with mythological depth —every location and faction felt alive and threatening.

The narrator’s voice and performance carried a perfect balance of gravitas and emotion, breathing life into each character — whether it was Orka’s unyielding resolve or Guthvar’s skittering unease or Varg's quite intriguing perspective. It wasn’t just storytelling — it was performance.

I also appreciated how the story gives more insight into Biórr and his actions and motives. Getting to know him better was crucial for the unfolding of the plot.

If you’re into visceral fantasy with teeth, this audiobook isn’t just worth listening to — it demands your attention.

John Gwynne’s writing has no fat in it. Just a relentless pace of plot, world and mythology building frequently punctuated with violence. Anyone that loves Norse legends will enjoy this reinvention of Viking bardic tradition.
