Über diesen Titel

A dramatic account of some of the most notorious figures of medieval and Renaissance history who ruled from the Eternal City. It is sure to grip fans of John Julius Norwich, Tom Holland, and Peter Ackroyd.

The papal tiara has been worn by a number of infamous men through the course of its history.

Some have been accused of murder, many have had mistresses, while others sold positions in the church to their followers or gave land and wealth to their illegitimate children.

E. R. Chamberlin examines the lives of eight of the most controversial popes to have ruled over the Holy See, from the reign of Pope Stephen VI, who had his predecessor exhumed, put on trial and thrown in the Tiber, in the ninth century, through to Pope Clement VII, the second Medici pope, whose failed international policy led to the Sack of Rome in 1527.

The Bad Popes explains how during these six centuries the papal monarchy rose to its greatest heights, as popes attempted to assert not only their spiritual authority but also their temporal power, only for it to come crashing down.

I‘m not into religion, but this is about religion only in that there is there is hardly ever any in the personal involved. But important to know that this is no opinionated bashing but based on historic facts (including some opinions of contemporaries) and narrated sensible, very informative and entertaining, as I had known next to nothing of all of it before. Like, yes, popes had been feudal lords and acting it in all terrible aspects, but why exactly? And that it was all forgery to begin with… All the lands and riches pressed from the people without any real legitimation, just threats with damnation for your soul in the end. Best commercial idea ever.

This book is great for everyone interested in history retold in an entertaining but never silly or stupid way.

Interesting and entertaining though eye opening for unpleasant facts as well

Riveting history well written and read, the author only sometimes uses some unnecessary generalisations and uses some descriptions of bloody deeds more for shock value than necessary. That said, the deeds were often so bloody it’s hard to tell of them without shocking the listener

Amazing insights into a dark past
