Über diesen Titel

Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place.

In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period and explores the political and social systems, as well as the technical and cultural innovations, which made this land extraordinary. At the heart of this book is the story of Babylon, which rose to prominence under the Amorite king Hammurabi from about 1800 BCE. Even as Babylon's fortunes waxed and waned, it never lost its allure as the ancient world's greatest city.

Engaging and compelling, Babylon reveals the splendor of the ancient world that laid the foundation for civilization itself.

Mesopotamia is the cradle of the first civilizations, and Paul Kriwaczek tells the region's history from the very beginning to its last days and long echoes - all the way to the last century.

Judging from their written and archaeological remains, Mesopotamians were not so different from us. Then again, in some respects they were, given that theirs was a life of constant dangers, often cut short by wars, natural disasters and diseases. Half of all children did not reach their fifth birthday. Kriwaczek wrote about these long-gone generations with empathy and sympathy, draws modern parallels and explains not only what the specialists hold to be the likely facts, but why they think it.

My biggest surprise was just how well the book works as an audio book. The paper version comes with a number of illustrations, but the descriptions are so vivid and well done that I could follow the narrative without any problems. The whole book is very accessible, not the least because the speaker does a superb job and kept my attention despite all the complex ideas as well as unfamiliar names of both people and places.

Not only did I learn a lot about ancient history from this book: The author's thoughts and discussions left me with many insights and new perspectives on more recent and current events, too. Hence, my full recommendation!

Accessible. entertaining and authoritative

Superb analyses! Unbeatable style of narration! Splendid speaker, as well. Highly to be recommended to all lovers of ancient history, even though the idea of being also at the end of an epoch of greatness and having to witness its decline and fall is rather painful. Yet the analogy is certainly convincing...

Simply splendid!

This clearly is not a researcher's book, but it is the book of someone deeply in love with the themes and concepts that he describes.
Written by a man now dead, in great prose, fluid and evocative language. He takes you on a guided tour throughout the history of Mesopotamia, seeing you through the biggest aspects of human existence: food, labor, reading and writing, war and rule, and most important, life, love and death.
A great storyteller and the narrator is great as well.
I dont even really have to recommend it, because its free with a subscription, anyone who stumbles across this, listen to it, you wont regret it.

Brilliant work of popular history

This author continuously and erroneously compares Sumer with the Soviet Union (with no leg to Stan on but a clear anti socialist stance.) and he treats the bible/Thora as a historical source. (it isn't.) There must be better books out there to learn about mesopotamia.

History lesson driven by an agenda
