Beautiful. Beloved. Hunted. The extraordinary life and death of Diana, as told by her brother, Charles.
‘When asked, ‘What was it like, growing up with Diana?’, my first thought is always, But I don’t know what it was like not to grow up with her…’
In September 1997, Charles Spencer stood in Westminster Abbey before a watching world and shared his grief at losing his beloved sister, Diana. Now, nearly thirty years later, he tells the astonishing story of his life with Diana and the tragic week of her death.
In childhood, Charles and Diana, the youngest Spencers, were inseparable – secretly calling one another Duch and Carlos. As each other’s closest confidantes, they roamed the family estate, endured extremely challenging boarding schools, survived terrifying nannies and helped each other through the agony of their parents’ divorce.
Yet everything changed when Diana married the Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and overnight became a global icon. Charles saw his older sister serve the world’s marginalized and relish being mother to her treasured sons.
But, pursued by a barbaric press as her royal marriage crumbled, she was left desperately alone. Charles always tried to be there for Diana – until that black night in August, 1997.
In Swan Song, Charles Spencer provides the most intimate, loving and honest portrait yet of his sister.
Praise for Charles Spencer’s writing:
'Top marks for its searing frankness, framed in wistfully beautiful prose’ The Times
‘Acutely observant, his turn of phrase is often delightful' Daily Telegraph
‘A moving, heartbreaking memoir’ Financial Times
‘A tour de force' Washington Post

It was touching how important holding the eulogy for his sister was and still is to him.
Don‘t believe what whoever and his dog think of the story. As always: Better read it yourself and make your own opinion.
Most interesting book on Diana so far

The most interesting parts were the early chapters about the Spencer family and Diana’s childhood. They gave me a much better understanding of the world she came from and challenged my assumption that she had a relatively normal upbringing.
I went into the book remembering Diana mainly with sympathy, but came away with a more complicated view. She was extraordinarily privileged, but also very young, insecure and naive. At 19, with little education or life experience, she seems to have had a romantic idea of marriage, children and the life she wanted. If you grew up believing that marrying well was the route to that life, marrying the future King must have seemed like the ultimate happy ending. In reality, she was emotionally ill-equipped to marry a 32-year-old man with considerably more life and relationship experience.
I found the later sections less compelling. Much of the material about the press and paparazzi was familiar, and at times the book felt as much about Charles Spencer processing his own memories and emotions as it did about helping me understand Diana.
I’m glad I read it, particularly for the Spencer family history. Ultimately, I came away seeing Diana as a more complicated figure: hugely privileged and famous, but also emotionally immature and sometimes misguided, and someone whose life ended terribly and far too young.
The Spencer Family History Was the Most Revealing Part
